Got a mate of mine with more projects than remaining life span, looking for competent loco builder to assemble Mercian Models Class 14 'Teddy Bear" loco kit to running standard.

Thoughts, ideas, recommendations....... All welcome & will forward on to my mate.

Thanks in anticipation

If your mate is the same person as my mate(!) then I am on with the class 14 now. To give you an idea of the kit, when I was in the land of employment I was told that there were never problems only CHALLENGES. The kit is certainly a challenge but I have to hand photos of the full size one at Embsay to refer to. I have only recently joined Western Thunder on the recommendation of my customer and am amazed at the amount of subjects. Regards to all, Robert

Welcome aboard. I too am amazed and thankful that people take the time to post their work. It is very much what we make of it so a few posts as you progress through the build would be appreciated.

It's dead easy ;) (although this is the 10mm version)
Your model looks good I hope mine turns out the same. One problem I,m having is forming the bonnets as the brass has needed annealing but my customer milled some 1mm formers for me which has helped. Also, and maybe I expect too much of the kit, the cab, as it comes out of the box, is too wide over the footplate! After all, however, kits are only an aid to scratch building but I will persevere. Regards Robert

Hi Richard Now that the madness of Christmas is all but over I can return to my project!! A bit of help if you don,t mine please. How did you fasten the handrails to your model? I am thinking about maybe 12 BA screws and nuts. At least then, hopefully, they will be secure prior to soldering on the handrail itself. Best wishes for the New Year Robert

Hi Robert, in the kit, the handrail/bar is a piece of flat nickel silver. I f look at the pic of the primered model you can see that I fixed nickel wire to the handrail strip (using 188 solder ) to line up with the holes in the bonnets. If I remember correctly I then spaced the rail from the body with a pair of forceps to act as a heat sink, while I soldered the inside of the bonnets with 145 deg solder.
Having said that, I reckon your idea with 12 BA screws etc would be a better way if I were doing it again - I have got a 1/32 kit as yet unbuilt.

The 10mm kit was built from the original "blow up" that Jim Harris did from his 7mm class 14 for which I made the patterns. I dont know how many kits Jim produced ( maybe 6 )
Eventually Trevor of Mercian acquired the artwork/moulds and I finally finished off the 10mm version.

Phil Parker painted the engine for the box label photograph. Trevor then produced the kit in 1/32 for which the patterns were modified by me.

Just in case you were interested.

Hi again Richard. The class 14 is progressing slowly but I am at a bit of a loss as to details of the brake cylinder/ linkage assembly. The drawings are of little help! Would you mind some photos of the underside of your model please? Regards Robert

Hi Robert
I can certainly take a few pictures, but it won’t be until next week. The 14 is at our clubhouse and as I shall be away this weekend I can’t get my hands on it before then.
