Guildex 2018

Just one month to go for the annual event.

Peter and I shall be there both days as operators for Saint Martin's Wharf; a model of a "Colonel Stephens" style railway somewhere in Anglia and built by Bob Alderman. St. Martin's Wharf was 'railway of the month' in Railway Modeller earlier this year and Guildex may be the last appearance as Bob has sold the layout.

Rumour is that the Red Hat has been cleaned especially for the occasion.

Definitely hoping to make the event again this year. Really should start planning what I need and placing orders for collection.

I’ve made the decision that we’re not doing Guildex this year. We’ve been to the show fairly religiously for several years now, and to be honest we don’t see much there we don’t get to see at other gauge specific shows nearer to home.

Still, I’m sure it’ll be a roaring success, even without my presence! :D

I have been asked by the Guild to share a bit of information on the show.

For ease I have amalgamated the pages that show the layout and traders in both formats.

Thank you Rob, very informative.

With the entry fee going up to £15, I must admit that I'm now thinking twice about going.

(Still good to see the Guild recognising that free advertising on Forums could help attendance)

Are you not a Gauge O Guild member Chris? It'll only cost you a tenner then. I believe you can join on the day and get a fiver refunded. :)

I was a member for only less than a year. Got diddled on the year membership only lasting a year if you join at the right time. I didn't, so it didn't. Haven't bothered to rejoin since. To be honest I found forums such as this and RMweb more helpful and inclusive.

Just checked and if I'm reading it correctly, if you join at the Telford show you get £5 off the entry but your £25 annual membership only lasts to the end of Feb (6 months), meaning you lose £12.50.rps20180808_201212.jpg

Can't help but think the Guild are missing a trick by not offering a combined show and membership rate at the Telford show.

A wiser man would have anticipated Telford, joined last November, had a membership valid until end-Feb 2019, received 3 extra copies of the G0G Gazette by now, reduced rate entry to Guildex, Doncaster and Kettering etc. etc.
Truth is Chris, it's your timing that is poor!

Indeed, poor advance planning (stupid boy) - I almost posted the same idea myself. That's precisely the time I would join if I ever joined again.

The bit I object to is the oft pushed line that joining at Telford saves you £5. Overall it leaves you worse off. Just seems somewhat misleading to push new membership at Telford as joining at that point only gives you 6 months membership for a full annual fee.

As I said I think the Guild is missing a trick to promote a proper value for money combination of Telford entry and membership.

aaaarrrggghhh!! Still in 2 minds whether I can make it or not. I've got lots of real life stuff to sort out which really should take priority but then posts like this is swaying me to say sod it! It's only one day and it would be really good to see what people are up to. I'm not really bothered about any of the trade stands and layouts but having a good natter with various people is seriously tempting.

Thanks for the additional info Ian, do you mind if I share it elsewhere?

Hi Rob,

No problem. Share away! We are trying to promote the modelling of the Scottish lines each of which has something unique to offer the modeller.

We will have books, drawings and a few bits for modellers which cannot be had from other sources. If you fancy learning more we will also be taking bookings for the Scottish Railway History Conference which we jointly organise in October.

Even the Auld Enemies can cooperate for the common good!

Might I add that the £15 entry allowed me to attend both days. So in effect £ 7-50. Being in the happy position of only living 40 mile away I was able to squeeze in a 3 hour visit on the Saturday which was well spent in a Recce, layouts were noted that I wanted to spend more time on, new toys were seen which having a sleep on I thought better not to jump in on but on the other hand others i liked the look of I did buy on the Sunday. If I'd only been able to do Sunday it would have been a rush and a struggle as most big shows can be. It was calm and civilised. I only wish all shows had the space to wonder around without getting bashed by bags or unable to get near the popular layouts. Thanks to all for the effort of setting it all up.
