....I have a nice running chassis. I ditched the Faulhaber motors and Grandtline gearboxes supplied with the kit. They were very large and the modified bunker won't contain them, also they were chassis and not axle mounted so the suspension wouldn't have worked. Thanks to Mr AJC I now have some of the excellent High Level gearboxes with Mashima motors. Didn't realise that OO gauge gearboxes had come on in the decades since I last built one!

.....well that worked out well, I have 2 basic running chassis.

Next I looked at the outer ponies and discovered that the etchings supplied in the kit are a little scant. I thought that some improvements could be made to them and reached for my piercing saw and some brass sheet. I was able to modify the etchings for the pony sides and bearing covers but the rest of the parts are handmade, with dimensions taken from the drawings.

I'm going to have a go at modifying the inner pony trucks next, then go back and add the cylinder drain cock mechanisms and detail up the cylinder head covers.....

It's been a little while now - a consequence of Pete having to care for his wife, Jen. I have a 4mm scale 'Russell' lurking in the stash for future enjoyment.

Never done NG before. The NGG16 locos are very cute, and building one is an odd mix of 4 and 7 mm. The wheels and bearings are 4 mm but all the fittings are 7 mm, so the wheel bearing housings, for instance, look out of proportion to those of a standard gauge loco. Odd but a refreshing change.

...well I was scuppered again by the scantness of the inner pony trucks of this build so I fabricated some of them too. They were quite complicated and hard to get right. There are many failed pieces in the scrap bin.

At last. Nearly a week to sort out something that ought to have been in the kit. Still a bit of detailing to do too. Why don't I just make Finney7 or MOK kits?.......

For the man who built a superb W1 in original condition from an Ace kit (well used some of the parts as I recall), you clearly like a challenge, or have masochistic tendencies! Finney7 and MOK would be too boring for you.

Strange little prototype by the way, but a fantastic build.

I got a bit tired of building Princesses and A(whatevers) so had a spell doing more esoteric stuff like this and the Ws.

Not sure where I lie in the kit vs. scratch thing. I really can't charge enough to cover the cost of a scratchbuild, as you'll know they can take a lifetime if you get carried away (and I always do, it's my thing!)

Kits are a bit frustrating (even the Premier League ones) as they're often compromised by the need to be built by someone with modest skills and tools and my anally retentive nature. I often spend ages modifying the kit, and in the end would have been better scratchbuilding. The W build I did was the best compromise as I got Mick Davies (very skilled man Finney7 lucky to have him) to draw many of the parts, had them etched and used them as an aid to scratchbuilding. So although the etchings cost a bit it greatly offset my hourly charge with a piercing saw!

Hi Nick,
Be interesting to see what you would do with a Finney 7 or MOK kit. Judging by what you did with the Whitby tanks, I'm sure there would be an insane number of additions. Beautifully done but completely mad.

My objective is to put on everything visible on the outside, when viewed on the track. The easier it is to do that with a kit the, better it is for me. I can knock up the odd detail part as and when, but guys like you ars in a different league. I'm not into adding all the "invisible" stuff, between the frames and to be honest, don't have the skill to do it.

Yep, the Mickster is a talented guy, but he can't solder. Have you seen that GWR County he's doing? I'd swear he's glued it together! ;)

Couple of points here I'd like to pick up on.

Wait till he gets the W1's, Nick was the catalyst and organizer for the original project long before it came into the Finney7 fold; so expect some super work.

Regarding inside stuff, sadly on the W1 you have to, it's part of the core and without it the frames are not strong enough, even more so on the following B1. Hopefully though it'll be no harder than current kits, just more bits to add.

Finally, 'don't have the skill to do it' I don't agree there, I'd concede don't have the belief or maybe the interest but no skill, sorry can't agree with that.

Everyone has the skill, what they may not have is the experience, will or belief that they can achieve it.

Hi Mick,
You are too kind. I certainly don't have the inclination to add inside stuff that is not part of the kit. As to the F7 W1, it's on my radar and in this case the inside stuff is part of the design, so even though it will be mostly invisible, that's fine and I'll put it on.

Only joking about you gluing the County. Just spotted that tinned layer inside the cab seam, so clearly you can solder. What a mess though! :p

PS. Yeah, I remember that Nick was instrumental in the W1 project, so I'm expecting madness of the highest order!
