7mm Scale 7 MOK 9F in Spain

I have finally got round to having a go at building a MOK 9F, it's been a while since I got hold of a solding iron, but I have a new ERSA 80 watt and a Resistance soldering unit (London road models). The kit is very good with lots of metal castings and very good instructions.

I might need some help further down the line (no pun intended).

All the advice you need there, really, Len. Except my personal two penn'orth which is to say that you probably have the definitive 9F kit there. I have no doubt that you'll enjoy it.

Brian

I've just had another look at the box photo. Is that really "Evening Star" or another 9F masquerading as such? I think I recognise the location which would mean it's not yer akcherl "Evening Star". I guess it doesn't matter much either way. Unless there have been some drastic mods a 9F is a 9F is a 9F - he says, ducking just a bit. (I remember the thing being built mumble mumble dribble dribble half past two)

Hi Brian, it is Evening Star. I hope to make some things to the tender to make it more better to assemble and dis-assemble it. I hope the bearings don't need a reamer.

You may be aware that there are some revised instruction sheets on the MOK website for download. Also, there were two well-documented and illustrated build threads (by Kevin Wilson and Kevin Tams) on the G0G forum which will steer you clear of some of the pitfalls etc.
Dave

Hi Dave I think I have the new kit with latest instructions (I will check), I am not a member of GOG forum so I can't check some of the pitfalls. Thanks.

I think the biggest mistake Dave made was with steam heating. I can find no record of any 9F fitted with steam heating in BR days.
I mostly built the kit in my caravan while in Andalusia also using the ERSA 80w iron. Very enjoyable. The part I mostly struggled with was fitting the backhead but I believe he has a solution for that now. Enjoy the build it builds into an absolutely delightful model.
Kev

ps just to add, If you're using the supplied wheels then in my opinion you need a fair bit of weight added to the boiler. Fit this during the build stage, it's very difficult to fit when it's all assembled.

Very much looking forward to your build, Len. A 9F in Scale7 looks like the ultimate challenge, although I gather from comments on here, that MOK kits are generally of very high quality.
I'm just hoping they re-issue the Rebuilt MN whilst I still have my faculties! That would be irresistible despite my commitment to P4.
Good luck,
Dave.

Hi Len,

I’ll be watching with great interest as I have one of these on order. Mine will be S7 too but with the 1F tender. 92010 to be precise. Any advice on any pitfalls would be most welcome,

cheers

It was a while ago that I built it, but I don't recall having to do much fettling at all and not on the bearings.

I spoke to Dave from MOK a few weeks ago and he told me he'd found a new supplier for the large casting, after his previous suppliers retired, and he hopes to reintroduce the MN. Don't hold your breath for it soon, he's a one man band and his time scales can be looooong, and being a perfectionist I know he'll take the opportunity for improvements.

You're going to enjoy that build Len

Dave Sharp is always happy to help with advice if you run into any problems.

Sorry but nooooo...

Its 92214 at GC with its plates and numbers changed which i think Brian was alluding to.

We had it at EOR a few years back, magnificent engine and the best of all the preserved 9f's by a long way so I'm told.

JB.

Thanks JB. I thought I recognised the background but couldn't be 100% certain. It's a relief to know that I'm not going gaga (yet). It's certainly an impressive beast.

I'm not educated enough about the 9Fs to know whether there are differences between 92214 and 92220 but I'd certainly treat that photo with a bit of caution, Len. I know there are plenty of detail photos about of the real Evening Star - I had access to a lot when I built my DJH 9F for club - but they are not my copyright.

Hi Brian I have seen Evening Star at the NRM I have two books of the 9F, RCTS Vol 4 and one buy my friend David Clarke Riddle Class 9F. So I won't be copying the preserved ones, it's 92077 with BR1C tender.

Excellent, Len. I have a few of my own of 9Fs taken in the late '50s/early '60s (regrettably no detail photos) mostly in colour and you're welcome to them if they will help. None of 92077 though. It sounds as though you have plenty of reference material already.

I've just reviewed them......er quite a few!!

Well done Len. I have the sound decoder here ready for you, programmed to Steve Baldock's recipe by John Gymer of YouChoos. Remember if you want to fit Steve's smoke and steam system you will have to find room for the components in the photo (not including the decoder packaging of course!) plus a speaker. As previously discussed Steve made the backhead removable so all the components could slide in and out for maintenance, that may be the biggest challenge.
