Projects for next year?

I could take a picture of the shelf above my workbench but I might scare myself...

So long as the G5 is ready for Telford I'll be happy ;)

I'll soon have these Western's bodyworks finished and in the paintshop and......... guess what! They're ALL GOING TO BE BLUE, BLUE, BLUE!!!!!!!! ha ha ahaaaaa (a "diabolical acting" a la Steam Video Show moment...(for those who remember). Sorry!)

Start the 4f when Simon gets the book in stock.
It is now "D day" and some of the stuff I said will be finished this year has already been started. The Jinty has been unsoldered ready for the cockups I made before getting the book from Simon, (it's amazing the amount of difference's there is between the actual photo's in the book, and what Jim gives you with the kit), but having said that the kit is a very good likeness. Phot's to follow, when the battery is fully charged.

Interesting POV, I see what you are getting at, but you can loose inspiration as well.
Wasn't meant like that: the digits I had in mind for extraction (pulling out) were my fingers...
I made some progress in 2010, but none in 2011, for various reasons.

Having said that this is the only UK based train forum I read ( not because I love myself!) although I do follow a US rail Forum and a couple of military sites, but they are building and doing sites if you get my drift, and I have learned from and been influenced by them so to me it is time well spent.

I wonder if I might strike an alternative note here. I dont generally subscribe to the view that hanging around and posting on forums eats into my modelling time (it might eat into the time that I'm supposed to be doing other things, like ATM getting dressed... ).

It tends to be a purer relaxation than the challenge of modelling, an alternative or addition to reading or (half) watching the box, or to fill in the time say between coming in from work and eating, or before bed. It's not usually time that I would have set aside for modelling, if I'm enthused and conditions are right, then not much drags me away. Interested to hear other thoughts though?

The interesting thing is that we seem to have an obsession with finishing stuff, what is wrong with not finishing ? as long as the process has been enjoyable, does it matter if a model sits there 85% complete?
I suppose it matters if you are a layout builder father than a stock builder :)...........I tend to build stuff I need for the layout ;)

Because, as Phill intimates, unfinished stuff isn't all that good for running on a layout...
Also, maybe so much stuff ends up unfinished precisely because the "process" has NOT been enjoyable.... the reason why I have only two brass kit locos; 1 finished, 1 half finished, and no plans to ever build another one.......
Just a point of view, of course - hats off to all those who's modelling lifeblood is brass locos, in S7, especially....

"er.... it's enjoyable Jordan, but can get tiring when there's some pressure to finish ASAP, then your in danger of loosing interest:rolleyes:

I see exactly what you are saying. im quite often searching/reading various things in the 10 minutes while i wait for the kids to do something. the advent of smart phones/ipads/netbooks makes it all possible.
I tend to think that if the modeller was motivated to build or do something, then they wouldnt be on the web at that particular time anyway ;) When I see people saying that they have done more modelling because xyz site was down, it implies to me that they werent that motivated or inspired in the first place!

In fairness both kits are what could best be described as 'challenging' and I wouldnt touch 'em with a barge pole. Going really O/T how many layouts ever reach 85% complete? but that is a whole different thread :)) my general point is that we beat ourselves up over not finishing things, but does that matter?

I don't think any layout that stands the test of time is ever truly finished as they evolve constantly & therefore keeps the onwer, club or groups interest ;)

I guess it doesn't really matter - particularly if you're satisfied by being 85% satisfied:confused: ..... Sadly, I'm not a finisher either, and I hate handing over "unfinished" work when there's always that bit "more" which could be done. But I do find that building or altering stock & locos for others does seem to add a bit of extra incentive to achieve a closure - and the satisfaction value generally tips over 100% for me if my 90% finished = 105% for the customer (if you see what I mean).
With regard to brass kits, there's no doubt that a poor kit is disheartening, but conversely can be seen as an increased challenge. Without having the increased challenge we wouldn't learn to overcome them and so improve our skills. I was (and still am) wary of brassworks and soldering, but by practicing and getting the right guidance and instruction, I'm improving. And with the improvement comes greater satisfaction in a job well done. I've recently bought a couple of EMDEKE wagons (which do go together nicely) for practice before ordering MMP stock and then I'll finish the etches for the Clayliner fleet I need to model this scene from 1976.................D1009 Reading 230876.jpg Oops - I forgot to add these to the Projects list!

One of the stock responses I think, along with 'oh my aching wallet' and 'it should be in Railroad, that';)

Well now my new workshop is ready I will have to actively choose between modelling and browsing the web - something that I do both in the same room now.

For me quite often it is a distraction being in the same room but I agree with you that that I am being distracted because I wish to be. Whether that is consciously or not is another matter........

1) Get outside and restart work on my fledgeling garden railway as soon as the days get longer (and warmer)
2) In the meantime, finish building a wagon kit rather than just starting another one!
3) Make time to put the odd update on WT so I can show some progress.... you chaps are great at encouragement
