Building an MMP RMB - a box of delights

It's going to be a while before I actually cut the first etch on this model, but I wanted to just leave this here as food for thought.

I collected a box from Mr Carr today. It's an MMP Mk1 RMB (miniature buffet) kit, with the interior detail kit.

I've procured a suitable ring binder for the instruction tome , and I took the opportunity to have a quick read. Can I just say, one corridor connection contains roughly 30 parts - and that's without the cover plates, which must have at least another 20 parts. This is some serious brass etched engineering.

I'll leave you for now with the thought that I am really going to enjoy this build - even though it probably won't start in anger until around Easter 2014!

(It's been agreed, sadly, we won't be adding curly ham sandwiches, concrete pork pies and empty polystyrene cups. :D )

I think there is close to 1,000 parts.

I'm actually quite envious of Heather building this, but it would take me a year or more to do it and in the meantime I'm going to busy myself with some MMP catfish wagons.

Heather,

The Vintage Carriage Trust register of carriages returns 57 entries for "RMB" coaches although two of that number have been scrapped. Diagram 99 appears to be quite common from the entries that I have accessed. Seems to be plenty of choice as to where to point the camera.

Thanks Graham. I need to check exactly which diagram the kit can build, or even if there's a choice. Currently, it's looking like the build may start over Christmas, and will be interleaved with the 57xx build.

you may wish to laminate the instructions.

I buy cheap plastic folders with translucent pockets in them, used for document display, they cost about £2.60 delivered for 25 pockets, less for less etc.

You then slip the instructions in, can remove them to refer to two side by side and they are reusable once the model is finished and the instructions can be filed. (In a filing system, not with a file).

Heather: a phone call to David Parkins will find out which diagram the kit builds. I have always found him very approachable and VERY helpful.

I will most likely be contacting David before I plunge into the build. Richard wishes to use third-party bogies and couplings, so I may need some advice before I break something!

I'm not going to count them. I could scratch a mark on the soldering iron for every part as I make it, I suppose. :))

Many are best not soldered and many more are not to be soldered - some NS parts in the interior as an exmple - glue in place in their natural state AFTER painting. Adhesive is often your friend! That way all the interior finishes and demarcations will be ultra neat!

The kit is for a D.98 coach - A 99 is possible - a 97 is not.

The reason for fitting Commonwealth bogies is that this is going to be a blue and grey coach in 1981, when virtually all catering vehicles were running on either Commonwealth or B4 bogies. The kit provides B1 bogies (which are a delight to build) but are not correct for my time period.

You pays your money...it's then YOUR choice, surely?

Even if you wanted it done as something that never existed, it's your right.
