Thanks Phil.
Over the weekend I got some of my mojo back and decided to try and get some of the extra buildings built and those already started finished. The new and newly finished are now finished all but for the gutters, downpipes, signage and a hint of weathering. I still feel there may be one or two more yet. The ones I have completed over the weekend are mainly very much kitbashed Metcalf kits. Of course they will obviously need pavements.

Some as you can see are almost completely hidden by the station buildings. When detailing is complete I'll post some more photos.

The harbour is coming on nicely Alan . The low white cottages on the left in the top photograph remind me of some of the Scottish west coast harbours I've visited whilst sailing.

Depending upon how important the harbour is/was, a nice building to have on the quayside would be a Harbour Masters office such as this one at Poole for example. (Photo from the Francis Frith collection).

And possibly a Custom House? (again Poole).

Thanks for the ideas Dave. Perhaps with a little juggling round one or perhaps both might be incorporated.

More work on the buildings, chimneys, pots and flashing and gutters and down pipes.

The Peco backscene is to see how it would look with a little more depth. Obviously the sky and background hills would be trimmed off as would some of the buildings. I'll do that and blue tack it in place and leave it for a bit to see how it looks.

Also last Monday with the help of my good friend SAD (owner of Salmon Pastures for those who may have seen it) started doing some work on the turntable. To be fair he fabricated the bits and made sure my hole boring was vertical.

First the bits

second how the male part (spindle fits onto the bottom of the turntable deck

Finally how the spindle looks fitted in its hole with the well in place. More work with SAD on that on Tuesday.

The turnatable by the way is a butchered Dapol kit cut down to make a 65ft table.

Hello Alan,

I have been lurking on this forum for far too long without commenting. I love the Wencombe/kingsbridge work you do and I think the Peco backscenes are working really well giving some good perspective.

Particularly interested in the turntable installation as I helped a mate try to install a Heljan table and it was a complete nightmare, keep it simple has got to be best.

Thanks for your kind comments John. It will be interesting to see how it looks with the Peco sky and landscape cut away leaving the Peco buildings against my painted backscene

The Peco buildings on the backscene do look very good! Just shows it aint what ya got, its how you use it :)
I assume they have some hint of Devonian inspiration somewhere along the line anyway, being Peco, like?

Wasn't (isn't?) Poole Harbour master's office the inspiration for the one at Madder Port by John Ahern?

That really is looking mighty fine Alan, I need to think about a backscene for my small test layout and this is proving really useful. Mine will be a somewhat more gritty industrial scene though.

Carrying on trying to get the harbour side finished I started cutting out the pavements (Wills) next to the buildings, I've narrowed them a bit. At the moment not stuck down as I have to decide how to paint/weather them. At the moment experimenting on some scrap bits.

I'm enjoying your progress with the harbour and it's all coming together with the small details . And it's nice to see a harbour on a layout.

If you're stuck for pavement colouring I would initially paint them a buff colour and apply a brown wash so it gets into the kerbstone and flag joints and see how it looks. The panels around the harbour cobbles could be concrete. As a idea why not have a few pieces of inset rail in the concrete to make it appear a siding ran alongside the harbour in more prosperous times.

It could well be. A lot, if not all, of the Harbour Masters offices and Customs Houses built during the C17th, C18th and C19th were elegant and/or imposing buildings.

Lovely build, Alan.

Just noticed the green Ford Consul Mk 1 in the last shot although I now see that it's crept in previously. That was my first car, in black. Happy memories of weekends spent with the Isopon and grease gun (not at the same time!) As I remember it was a grease up every 1000 miles and a service every 5000.
