Bagshot station build

Now two boxes of 1mm glass have turned up within hours of each other, I have enough for a lifetimes supply of window panes. All I have got to do is pluck up enough courage to try cutting it!

Meanwhile, as I have started these, I'll will try and finish...

SAM_x0859.JPG

First of two or three varnish coats on a light colour (Matt 119) ground for an "oak" finish. I'm looking forward to distressing this one!

SAM_x0858.JPG

For a bit of colour to fill a gloomy corner, a nice old "Pyrene Conquest" fire extinguisher, once again shaped up from sprue...

SAM_x0864.JPG SAM_x0869.JPG SAM_x0871.JPG

The ring handle on top came out a bit wonky, but if I try a tweak, it will almost certainly break. Someone was clumsy and has given it a wallop will be the excuse for leaving it alone now?!

After a bit too much fussing I am happy with the extinguisher, although I admit it would have been nice to have had a transfer instead of the blank and slightly blobby hand painted panel on the front!

SAM_x0880.JPG SAM_x0895.JPG

It should of course be hung on a bracket, especially as this is one of the "turn upside down to operate" variety, where even just knocking it over could break the sulphuric acid bottle seal and set it off!

The most obviously suitable place would surely be adjacent to the doorway. A colour photo found on the web of Wareham station clearly shows just such a fitting, and indeed, provided the reference used for this particular make and model. Trouble is, now there are coat hooks in the alcove there isn't anywhere else sensible to hang it?!

It will have to stay parked down by the locker, as I have pinned and glued it to the wall now!

And now for that rather too tidy table.

I have managed to patch the back wall (deliberately) badly. There are a couple of traces visible, but I feel they look like reasonably authentic damage.

SAM_x0913.JPG

And now, this is where the fun really starts...

SAM_x0921.JPG

I scrubbed off most of the varnish on the top, then applied a thinned wash of blackish brown paint with a brush, then dabbed and smeared it with my finger tip. This was repeated until I was happy with level of ingrained grime. I was careful to leave some areas nearer the middle less affected.

Then I cut two short lengths of plastic tube that roughly equated to the sizes of the teapot base and cups. The inside of the tube was slightly opened out to make a thin rim, and the ends were dipped in the brown wash and used to print lots of little ring stains!

A once again repeated process of dabbing, wiping off and re-applying built up a nice layer of worked in and scorched goo!

SAM_x0925.JPG SAM_x0926.JPG

It almost seems a pity to cover some of it up with objects!

When I put the ashtray in the middle, I will use a hot pin to apply some burns to finish!

Pete.

As I read through that post, I actually smiled when I got to the table - a smile of anticipation of good things to come. I wasn't disappointed.

Although 1/32nd is generally felt to beyond the remit of MRJ, they have been known to publish articles covering the scale in the past. Our own @Simon Castens has been featured, for example. I'm sure a write-up of this build with copious illustrations would go down a treat at the editorial office.

Thanks Heather and "Other"!

It sounds like good idea to put some of this work in print as well. I like the thought that, if for no other reason, it could act as an accessible source of future reference and encouragement for others.

Thanks too JB, I have sent you some pics by the old grinding, hand cranked, it would be quicker by pigeon, email!

Apart from MRJ - how about a series of articles for the G1 newsletter & journal.

I'm sure the new editor would welcome this information, as would the wider G1 membership (& you'll probably see it in print reasonably sooner than MRJ - but don't quote me on that....)

Just a thought..........

Having been to the AGM yesterday I think it (G1MRA) needs all the help it can get:headbang:

As Private Fraser (often) said - "We're all doomed…"

Yours controversially

Ooooh, do tell....... more downward spiral into that black hole......?? John Taylor & I were discussing, yesterday, the pending move of the membership admin to Warners and all the potential angst that may ensue........

We hope we're wrong

No real angst, and I personally think the Warners thing is reasonable given that nobody could be found to take the job on.

It's more just a near complete lack of modelling in the show itself and a waffling AGM that gave no useful information and announced committee changes in the most unsatisfactory and odd manner.

On a brighter note Neil Butcher was there with his superb whitemetal castings and Derek was displaying a WIP TME S15 on Geoff Calver's stand - quite something else:bowdown:

Apologies to Peter for intrusion.

No worries Simon, after all, I did ask!

Sounds like I should be the one apologising even more for disappointing you by not being there with Bagshot?

Pete.

No apology required, although you and Bagshot being there would have been a great addition. That said, I'm afraid you'd get a more receptive reaction to your work at a "modelling" show, it would have gone way over the heads of most of the folk at Woking on Saturday:rolleyes:

I wasn't expecting you to be there by the way, but did had an interesting conversation with Derek about your fantastic artwork. My friend Dennis and I brought up G1 things to put on display, but there was no members models display stand provided, so that was a complete waste of time and effort:(

Blimey, I'm turning into a right old complainer. More positively I have just got in from running trains in the garden and I can report it all works in the rain:thumbs:

Simon, I think we should press for a display of finescale 1/32 models at the next AGM (2017 - Godmanchester). When we ran a finescale display a few years back it was a great success but none of the committee at the time seemed interested in following it up. New committee now - you never know. Centrepiece could be Bagshot station!!!!!
