2015 Wagon Competition - an open wagon

Last year the S7 Group held a competition for building a wagon from a Peco kit... any kit, any way... provided that the wheels conformed to S7 standards. Judging of the competition was at the October meeting at Mark in Somerset and the Judge was Steve Flint (editor of Railway Modeller). As the competition was "judged" to have been a success the S7 Croup Committee has decided to run a similar competition this year.

The current issue of the S7 Newsletter, issue no. 99 published February 2015, outlines the objective of the pending competition and the rules for entrants. Judging of the competition is to be at the S7 Group AGM which is being held at the Warley MRC on 20th June 2015.

In summary:-

* build a wagon from a 7mm kit, the wagon to have wheels to S7 standards;
* the wagon to be an "open wagon" which can / could have been seen on a railway in the United Kingdom;
* the wagon to have been made by a person who is a member of the S7 Group at the time of judging;
* the wagon(s) entered into the competition on the day of the AGM;
* a person can enter more than one wagon, each wagon being considered as a separate entry.

Wagons whose construction has started before today are acceptable provided that the wagon complies with all other rules of the competition.

Finally, at this point there are some aspects of the competition which are to be decided... none of those aspects are going to get in the way of kit construction for the competition!

S7 Group members can read more about the competition in the current issue of the Newsletter or online.

regards, Graham

Right then. I'm in. :thumbs:

I'm now over the solvent addiction that I picked up the last time around :eek: and I've a whole new set of files that need to get used. :cool:

Now. Who has stolen my copy of 'Southern Wagons'?

This all sounds like jolly good fun and I have an interesting wagon to build. However it would take over from my other current build and I would have no way to paint it other than in undercoat before the deadline. Would that still qualify?

Any particular reason why the wagon should be British?

After a lot of discussion it was a committee decision for this year for it to be British.

The competition is likely to be an annual one with a different theme each year. So for example this year's competition could have been for a mineral wagon or a box van, instead it was agreed to make this year's competition more open because of the short time from announcement to the AGM for judging day. In future we would hope to announce the competition in the July or, more likely, the November issue of the Newsletter.

Is one able to enter a wagon that has already been completed?

I think that the original post provides the answer.

And in case anyone is thinking of asking, kits which have not been started by the forthcoming AGM are not eligible for the 2015 competition.

Yes I read that, I just missed out by a few months on the original challenge, this may be the incentive I need to pull my fat digit out and put to use all this rail and chairs I have!

Silly question, why just open wagons?

Not a silly question.

Giving the competition a "theme" can encourage people to build a kit.... and provides the S7 Committee with the opportunity to ring changes on the competition year on year.

I hope to offer the committee, by the summer, a list of possible "themes" for the 2016 competition so (polite) suggestions please, preferably by PM rather than in this topic.

I'm tempted as well...

Although Moorgate is a bit of a stop- start project, I had a look in my cupboard of shelf queens so perhaps this is the opportunity to build them all and knock up something to run them on.

Well, add me to the same list as well, and that makes it three people on here thinking exactly that !

OTOH, 30 months from trackplan to running layout in my case would be a pretty damned impressive effort. Especially as I would need to build most of the rolling stock as well.

But on the bright side, it would at least keep me off the streets? There's three long summers in there to do all the woodwork, track building, electrics and scenery, and two long cold dark winters in there to build the stock. :thumbs:

. . . I've just convinced myself, haven't I? :eek: :oops:

Yeah, but ... No, but ... Yeah, but ...

That 2015 kit building competition is now well over the horizon - I'm spending all my time avoiding building that, right now ... :'(

What is the deffinition of a open wagon in the rules of the competition, does it have to be a traditional open wagon eg 5 plank, or could things like plate wagons, bolsters and hoppers be included?

What is the definition of a open wagon in the rules of the competition... ?
The competition is intended to encourage kit building and participation so the scope of "open wagon" is left rather wide, if any wagon type might be excluded then that is likely to be the GWR Manure wagon and only on account of aroma.

Go exotic if you wish... there are some impressive prototypes to be found in the Engineer's fleet or amongst those used for special, heavy, loads. On the other hand, a simple, traditional, merchandise wagon shall be welcome.
