A bit more progress today as I decided to tackle the chassis. A couple of hours saw the wheels, gears and motor all installed. Plunger pickups also were installed. The chassis runs freely. Next stage is to tighten the grub screw in the gears so that it engages the axle and then attach the wiring to the motor.

Really pleased with this as it is the first 7mm chassis that I have put together.

............ and here it is having its first test on the trackwork of Mllicent Street.

.............and heres Tappa taking it for its forst test drive...............cue diesel noises!:D

Mind no amount of noise could drown out the low level mutterign form over the other side of the room where this JLTRT WD 2-8-0 is taking shape................ its a lot more complex than the 350 thats for sure!

A cl. 14 is more pressing! If only Heljan would get their finger out. Although Hull had 03's, they seem quite camera shy and tended to be used either at Paragon station on pilot duties or other minor shunting - don't think they were used on trip freights which is what Millicent Street will see. Unless of course, anyone can say otherwise....

Further to our conversation the other night Lucky Fellow, I posed this question to my official Southern Spy.
In the days when I first met him in the early 70's, he was 2nd in command at Botanic Gardens and he confirmed that the 03's allocated there did nothing more than shed pilot and ECS duties, never on trip working. I also asked about their top speed as against the 08's and his comment was "Well the 03's were faster than the 08's but they wasted too much time changing gear".

I know this is of thread but that's a fantastic picture Mick. Of particular interest to me is the timber train and how well loaded it is, perfect for HDN. Do you have any more with this type of thing in the background?

Never saw any at Goole, there was always a Goole allocated 08 there.

I'm talking 1972 on.....

The time before that was L&Y "pugs" we were chasing...and being chased by an irate foreman, since someone had set a diesel on fire........

I think my information will pre-date 1972. Yes I remember seeing a rake of wagons at Goole, from the train window en route to Doncaster for a day's spotting, apparently moving by themselves until I realised there was a "Pug" amongst them.
Subject to confirmation the notion of acquiring an 03 has been dropped in favour of another steam loco but what else survived, working, to the very end of steam in Hull?

Given the late date if memory serves (my research isnt to hand at present) the final steam allocation in Hull were WD 2-8-0's, some B1 4-6-0's and ex LMS 4MT 2-6-0's . The small steam locos (private industrials aside had long gone).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_Thompson_Class_B1_61306 suggests B1 at least in 1967.

Of course we could always have a nice Dairycoates split box type 3!

A quick look at the Dairycoates allocation. The last tank engines Class J72, J94 and V3 departed 1963, by the time of the layout (1966/67) the only steam left at Dairycoates was a LMS 4MT, B1 and WD engines. The 4MT went in 1966, the other classes reamained until the dimise of steam. Attached a photograph of the last steam engine off Dairycoates shed 10 June 1967.

Sad photo.

I remember going to a meeting of the Scunthorpe And District Railway Enthusiasts Society, SADRES, on February 22nd, 1966. After the meeting closed, about a dozen of us cycled down Cottage beck road, cut across to Rowland Road, and followed the "Frodingham Footpath" a long footbridge spanning the Scunthorpe West Yard.

We cycled down to Frodingham depot around 9pm, and instead of our usual welcome, were given a guided tour by the foreman. Never to be forgotten, despite their being only about six engines on shed and none in steam.

I remember a feeling that night as I went to bed, that something had passed from my life..........

36C RIP.

Last nights conversation on the subject had us weighing up the posibilities of both the B1 and Ivatt.

More research me thinks - particuarly on who does kits of same! (remember we have not been 7mm modellers for long and dont actually know all the manufacturers).
