Axleguards

I thought some of you might be interested in the first stages of design for the JLTRT box van. I am making these as direct replacement, and I find a 3d model really helps the process.

There will be some others in the offing as well :D

Now come on.

Putting shadows in is just showing off! :)

Seriously though, the JLTRT wagons do need these. I'm doing a batch of 5 Presflos and I am seriously unimpressed with the underframe and white-metal castings in general. The castings, including the W irons, axleboxes, keepers and brakegear is lumpy, too thick and poorly cast. It's a fight, and a slow one at that, to get the best out of the underframes. Which is a pity as the plastic hoppers and main chassis (solebars, buffer beams etc.) are fantastic - accurate, sharp and a huge time-saving.

I shall take them with me on holiday and post some pics when I get back - if they haven't been hurled off the nearest cliff.

I agree about the castings  I have a couple of presflos in the todo pile so there will be some bits for them.

And with the piano wire and keeper in place :D

Oh and when I am happy I will add the brake levers and brake guard. I shall leave the brake shoes, hangers and yokes as per the kit as they are ok and I am only trying to improve rather than rebuild the underframe

Ah, it's clouded over

A very simple elegant approach. I can think of a few other wagons I've got that can benefit from something like that :) Did you consider doing the W irons in pairs, or does this give you more flexibility?

Ideally all four would be on one part making the whole assembly a drop in tray (this is my prefered approach) but the JLTRT kit has moulded underframe detail so the individual parts will fit into the recess designed for the W/M axleguards. The presflo will be the same and I guess the class b tanks as well.
It's much easier (and quicker) starting from scratch.
I am quite taken with Chris Pendletons mk1's in the latest MRJ so I will be applying some of those ideas to mine.

A quick shot to show why they are individual axleguards and also why I shall keep the W/M brakes. Fingers crossed I will get it done over the weekend so i can send it off with the Warning flash
