The work which goes into getting a show to the point when we all hear the announcement "The Exhibition is now open" is tiring, mundane, frustrating, demanding and often too much for the time available. Our show is put together by a team of six people and work on the next show starts even before the doors are open for the current exhibition. Apart from being Treasurer I take on the responsibility for the advertising in the show guide and for the internet publicity... a task which I enjoy very much for this is an opportunity to look at some really good modelling and equally good photography. When the two topics come together then the pleasure is more than doubled. Here is a case in point.

I appreciate that the railway presence is limited, the street modelling makes up for that deficit. The roof line is engaging, the pathway is understated, the period of a quieter time. And the scale?

East Grinstead Town is L&BSCR, Victorian period, 4mm, photo courtesy of Ian White.

only wish I could get down to see it - and the rest of the exhibition, in the flesh.

Hope all goes well.

And another case in point... whilst perusing the photos of East Grinstead Town (zoom in of course) I spotted a lovely detail and an interesting comment on how railway people view some of the events of the past. Fate is being kind to you for I thought that I would share that detail before moving on to another layout.

So enjoy this cameo, almost a candidate for a WT-caption theme. And in case you decide to look, no, this detail is not in the photo above!

Always strange to see references to Aldworth Science College or whatever its called now. Although these days I'm in Scotland, I went to The Richard Aldworth School back in the 1980s - wish I could get down for the show but a bit too far to come, sorry!

And now for a real stunner. MRJ is known for presenting articles with an introduction that reads something like "generally we get a whisper, a rumour... this time nothing... onto the stage unannounced...". I recall such sentiments being applied to the Gerry Hall show, to Hursley, to Bucks Hill - the next photo shows a layout which is new to me and one which delivers, ticks all the boxes, shall please the most fastidious... I do hope that you see this layout in the same way that I do and that you add your comments to this thread. Here is the first photo of Alkham, courtesy of British Railway Modelling, provided by Ian Hollis.

Hands up those who thought "where is the railway?" I did and then decided to use the zoom facility. Look for the broken railing under the tree on the RHS... and the dog inspecting the water in the garden pond... and the air vent in the base of the chimney flue of the centre flint cottage.

OK, ok, here is a photo of Alkham which includes the railway.

Love the TK.

And the people discussing the impact of Beeching on their railway.

Did I mention the fences in the previous photo? Five styles of fencing, all appropriate to location and use... especially the sleepers for the coal space.

Go on, use the zoom, you will enjoy the modelling.

I have about six photos more of Alkham so just keep coming back, regards, Graham

Please add any pointers to any details which catch you eye.

thanks, Graham

our posts must have crossed - the less is more is certainly evident here, thank goodness that there are the two people and the dog in the picture - really caught the sleepy village theme

cheers

... there are the two people and the dog in the (lower)picture...
... not to mention the little girl next to the dog in the second one...
Well, I did not wish to make any comment.

Actually, Mike's comments here prompt me to add a note. The images posted on this forum are of less than 1MB per image whilst I am looking at the original files that are in excess of 20MB - there is always a chance that the forum images are not as clean and clear as the originals.

Absolutely stunning. The weeds round the coal stage are amazing. A real gem. My better half, at first sight, did not believe that it was a model.

Paul, use the zoom on that shot and then get the heebie-jeebies wondering when the big and nasty is going to come crashing through the pampas / savannah / undergrowth. As yet I cannot see any chair indents in the sleepers nor any holes for fastening the chairs... lose some brownie points there then.

When I did the internet advertising for our 2011 show the most frequent request was for track / layout plans to be included in the show guide. We did not manage to sort anything for 2011, so when I started the internet advertising for the 2012 show - together with assuming responsibility for the cost-price strategy of the show guide - I took note of the request for information on the track plans. Unfortunately, in order to provide the show guide as free to every ticket holder - we printed and gave away 1300 A6 booklets of 32 pp each - the plans could not be included in the guide. Another method of providing information on the layouts was required to meet the demand.

For the 2012 show I created a thread on RMWeb which contained nothing other than track plans and that seemed to go down well with the readers of that forum. I do not intend to include a similar thread here, unless requested, so you can find track plans for the 2013 exhibition layouts here .

Lyndon is an impression of Victorian London with buildings which are described in the novels of Charles Dickens, this layout is appearing at the Basingstoke 2013 Show, photo courtesy of Lyn and Jim Owers. And yes, there is a railway in there somewhere!
