PS what motor/gearbox other than the ABC motor bogie would you use for the westerns ( i guess there would be two)

Rob

Hi Rob,

I've been using Ron Chaplin motors/gearboxes, but as my stock is now depleated I'm ordering the ABC Diesel gearboxes for the Wizzos which aren't getting the luxury of the ABC Motor Bogie. I've got one spare bogie coming together on the Slaters diesel gearbox and Mashima motor which I'll be using as a reserve at shows in case one of mine "fails in service" - which means you're more likely to see it under my Class 50!!;)

Have to recommend Cynric's boom-boxes again. Now I've experimented with them a bit they certainly make a big difference, and are best used exactly as he proposed.... I'll be wanting similar for the 20's, 22's 24, 25, 26, 27........

The boom box is Stephs suggestion, I can't take any credit as I just clicked a few things to make it :)
Rob I have used ABC for the past 5 or 6 years they have never let me down and many of them are doing long heavy runs in a local garden. The downside is cost..... we found a single motor sufficient for about 8 coaches, but on the principle that 2 is better than one, everything apart fro type 2's gets a pair of motors.

I'm going to try those Roxey gearboxes that Brian Danniels recommends in some of mine :) .........those ABC bogies are the Dogs B****cks  , but prohibitively expensive for me :(

Sorry Steph! Credit where it's due..... I'm impressed with the improvements these make all round:thumbs:

Yes, nothing wrong with those (Roxey's) either with the right motors and made up nice and true.....

This is what came home with me from Halifax:-

No excuses now....... must crack on.

No sweat ;) - be interested to see what the finished articles look like though; any chance of a pic or three?

And +1 for the Roxey gearboxes, intelligent design, superb gears (Markits, I believe) and a synch to use with split axles and/or delrin chain drive. We've got them in a surprising number of our locos now and the 40:1 with Canon 1833 is a lovely combination for most steamers...

Sorry for not posting for a while - been a bit too busy with work and all these 52's. Got a bit bored with the full scale and 7mm versions, so have dipped my toe into a rescue on a Gauge 1  Help!

And I'd promised a few shots of the layout inside the JLTRT Western for you..... these will follow.

Boris.

Looks healthier already stripped back to brass .........what are you doing to it ?

Well, to be honest Phil, I'm not sure where to start. I'm going to unsolder all the fittings, then remove the cab cowls and windows. New etches for the windows (scaled up from the 7mm ones on their way for you), and various other odds and sods, cab details, bulkheads, etc. I need to remove the roof-panels as the large, one-piece section (including the fan covers) is soldered off-centre and needs straightening too. The distance from the back of the cabside windows to the front of the nose is about 5mm short, and the front has the usual fault with the continuous angle.... I'm considering taking the front off, adding the missing 5mm and re-shaping the front, but it'll be a lot of extra work. I guess I just don't like it looking wrong:(. Oh, and there's a lovely kink right down one body-side, in line with the weak-point just below the cooler-group air intakes.

I guess the biggest challenge will be the new cowl shape, which will be the same for you with the 7mm if you do choose to do something with it?

Anyway, I have lots of time for this one - about 13 months or so, and I don't have to do the bogies as they're being made by Brian at ABC. Now if Brian's doing the business with the bogies (and I believe he's doing them as the motor-bogies in Gauge 1) then I feel I've really got to get the rest of it right, too.

Back to the AutoCAD for a bit over Xmas, I think.;)

Here's the pics of the layout I'm using in the JLTRT 52's for the fans, soundcard and mini-decoder. I decided to go against convention and fit as much as possible into the body so that it would be a very simple task to drop out a chassis and replace with a spare one at shows if anything went wrong. The mini-decoder for controlling the fan speed is underneath the ESU LokSound V 4.0 in the centre.

The directional lights are not fitted in this one yet, but I'll show those in place over the next couple of days or so....

Hi Boris, nice to see you've made a start on that gauge 1 wessie:thumbs:. I look forward to seeing this progress.

The wiring etc on the JLTRT ones looks extremely neat. Might have to pick your brains on how you've done it.;)

I also need to think about those window theatres:rolleyes: at some point.

Rob:)

Ian, very brave taking that on. I hope you don't lose anymore hair sorting it out!!

A properly shaped Western in 1/32 will be a sight to behold, I very much look forward to watching your progress in due course.

If I can do a job like your DMU cab, Simon, I'll be delighted!

I'm very flattered, thank you very much:oops:, although it has to be said that I haven't got to the useful stage of "hollow with windows" yet:))

As I'm badly affected by a powerful attack of WR diesel era infatuation at the moment I might try and get back on to it again...

Any chance of a pic of this beast at the side of a 7mm one Borris ?

Sounds a bit like a new kit would be easier than what you are having to do, but having said that it is do-able though :);) ....I have had serious thoughts of getting one of these kits to play with myself, but 1/32 seems the way to go rather than G1 :)

You asked about it's smaller brother at Withercombe ? cab roofs & windows will be the top priority........but I may try & do something to sort the continuous angle, but I do not want to resort to a complete disassembly job on them .....in other words, no fixed plans....I'll make it up as I go along really:D

Phill :)
