BR (SR) Class 419 MLV

I built a 'Jaffa Cake' liveried 419 a couple of years ago and it made up into a decent model, sufficient to encourage me to buy another kit, this time to be in Post Office red livery ( I had commisioned the transfers for this and a PO red 128 from Scale Model Transfers) and also using the ABC traction motors - 2 No, mainly as a trial run for using some in the future in a David Parkins 31 or 40.

I have now made up the powered bogie and am very pleased with the results so far - just need to work out the pivot arrangements, having made the motors 'non - spinning', that should not be a problem.

Interesting to see that, I fancy a go with the traction motors myself. what is the haulage like?

Hi Cynric,

as far as I know, one motor will just move a couple of coaches, but two motorshould be ok for around four. If I progress to the 31/40 scenario, then there would be two in each bogie - which should pull quite a load. As far as the 419 is concerned, they did have tail loads, but only when running on the 'juice'

I'll keep you posted with progress in this respect.

That's a really useful picture of the motor bogie, if I get anywhere with the 121 it looks just perect for the job and one should hopefully be enough from what you are saying.

How quiet/noisy are they in operation?

Thanks for posting the pictures

Hi Simon,

you are welcome, glad it helps. I'll take a few of the underside, showing how I 'capture' the motor to stop it rotating around the axle. Very quiet in operation - like all ABC motor/gearbox combinations. The tricky part was attaching the leads to the motor terminals as one is very tight behind the wheel.

Hi Mike

Thank you very much.

They look to be a really nicely put together bit of kit - I like the MLV too

The whole EMUish scene is something else I could get all too easily distracted by

Hi Simon,

I'm certainly thinking about an MLV in G1 - just for display, but with the traction motors - you never know

What (if any) benefit - apart from lower profile- would you say this was over an ABC motor bogie ?

Ressaldar

Western Thunderer
I think that it is the lower profile that is the 'selling point', especially when used in DMU/EMU applications, in which case, two traction motors will be more then enough power for the usual maximum four car rakes.

Firstly, a photo of the underside of the power bogie showing the plate which holds the motors captive. This will change slightly when the pivoting aspect is addressed.

Following hotly on from yesterdays start on the body - ends and internal partitions all fitted, today I have done the rainstrips, door hinges, door buffers (brass dress pins) and the cab front steps and rainstrips.

I'm pleased with the progress thus far.

Looking good Mike. I have to say I do like working with Brass.

I have a loco with a resin body in the pile which will be a first and I have just made enquiries of JLRT regarding their WD kit whose boiler and main part of the tender are castings although I am not sure at the moment if they are resin or metal as I believe it is one of their earlier kits.

Hi Rob,

brass is nice, but nickel silver is even better.

I have a David Andrew's rebuilt West Country to finish - this too has a resin boiler, but if it's anything like the resin firebox and smokebox on the Duchess, then there will be no problems - never usually is with David's kits.

Cheers for the recommendation for David Andrew's, Mike (is it DA that will do all the etches in Nickel for an extra 10%?).

I am currently compiling a list of loco's that I would like for the wife to get me for my birthday (she will chose one so it will be a surprise) the JLRT WD being one of them. I haven't yet had any major dealings with Nickel other than chassis but two of the loco's in my to build pile (MOK 8F and Meteor Models W1 that has the resin boiler that I was referring to) are all nickel construction. I would have done the scratch build in nickel if I could have sourced it at a reasonable price. I can buy 300 x 300 0.3mm brass sheet for ??6.00 per sheet + P&P so it makes it quite reasonable to have a go at things without worrying about the cost if you have to remake the odd part or three.

I second the vote for N/S, much nicer to work, it holds shape better for boilers, and it is less prone to dents when handling.

Hi Rob

yes David does the 'nickel' upgrade.

I built one of his Schools from an all nickel kit and it went together really well. I mused JPL wheelsets and an ABC Canon motor/gearbox combination using the American pick-up system

black is how I remembered them from the 50's but might do one in Maunsell green one of these days - another one for the wish list.

The body is now complete and primed save for the 'after painting' pipework, windscreen wipers, door handles and battery compartment clips. The cabside glazing bars will be straightened prior to the windows being fixed in position.
