Brass Theft at Graig Wen Colliery.

Sometime over last weekend metal thieves struck at Graig Wen colliery "liberating" the brass bell from 1338.
Our foreman thinks they were probably souvenir collectors.
As Dai Larfin, the Crymlyn A Shop stores person, had none in stock 1338 borrowed 1140's bell until a new one could be obtained from Ragstone Foundry Ltd.
Ragstone delivered a replacement bell and the locos have now had their bells refitted. Our foreman sports his new jumper.

Was it knitted by the foreman's wife, or might it have come from an early Kay & Co catalogue? :D

This early 1920s one certainly shows recommended apparel for locomotive shed staff!

Was the left hand page picture painted by Reginald Dalby??!!??
Has a lot of his 'Thomas' pictures look about it!!

No comment on the Foreman's jumper!! (except awesome painting by whoever did it!!)

I had to look up Reginald Dalby. I am now educated.
I discovered that he designed the original Glacier Mints Polar Bear.
It is of course possible that he was influenced by the 1920s Kays catalogue illustration......

Quite unbelievable - Graig Wen Colliery to Percy the green engine via Crymlyn A Shop, a jumper and a shopping catalogue. You couldn't make it up :))

Wonderful, I've shared this story with all my Grandchildren who are ardent "Thomas" buffs, they are now that bit older and should understand the adult aspects. Thanks, a superb piece of Railway trivia.

You say "sewing", I say "sowing" … let’s call the whole thing off!
It’s a bit like the argument about the plural of fish. ;)
Sorry Heather, sow and sew are not forms of the same thing like shew and show! Hence my jibe! Sow=plant, sew=join
