It is with great regret that we have the show cancelled, by the UWE . Due to venue becoming a Florence Nighting gale hospital. The venue when returned will be transferred into a different format. So will not be available for exhibitions. We would like to thank all our supporters trade and friends for the hard work and support over the 30 years from our roots in Temple meads to UWE. We will look for a new venue but nothing compares to this at present so may be smaller. we are kepping our web page open for information includes our directory for Trade as this give a direct link if available or a phone correct at present .many thanks Bob S Alan N and Bob T BOGG

I'm really saddened by this Bob. It was the exhibition I most looked forward to, a great environment, very friendly, and a credit to the work you and the rest of the BOGG had put in over the years.

I was hoping that the 2021 show would mark the start of a return to normal behaviour, but I guess it's not to be. I hope you can find a replacement venue for 2022.

So am i it will be our 30th year this next show from when is yes we could put on a show. we may have to have a smaller venue, but a new Brabazon entertainment building is in the pipe line. this could be on the lines of N E C ( expensive )spend the money to get in and none to spend after .

Hi Bob. I echo Richard's comments. Bristol is an outstanding, friendly exhibition and the venue was perfect. Personally I hope very much that you can find a reasonably priced alternative. One of the great things about the UWE was the amount of circulation room - and the second great thing was the availability of pre-show catering.

Good luck in your search for another suitable venue.

Bob,

Sad news indeed. The Bristol Show has always been enjoyable to attend and I'm sure there will a great many crossed fingers that you manage to find a replacement venue. Best wishes.

As a previous now and then visitor (only because of distance), it was set to become the essential No.1 7mm 'go to' for me next year onwards :(

How much importance do you (the organisers) place on the time of year for the show, acknowledging that it has been a great tradition over the years?
Might perhaps a radical change of date afford you more scope in finding a long term replacement venue?

Great shame about this Bob. Best show by far as far as I am concerned. Would Thornbury Leisure Centre be worth looking at. The Bristol show in May always seems to be well accommodated although parking can be a pain at times.

Thornbury Leisure Centre not a bad idea in my book, but it can get a little hot in summer don't know what it would be like in winter. In 2019 we took our Lowick/Scratchy Bottom layout, for the Bristol show, and it got so hot our varnish/PVA river melted.
Good road connections not sure about bus and rail, but these days that might not matter.

Coming from a long way east of Brizzle I had to look up Brabazon.
This refers to the transformation of Filton airfield into ‘Brabazon’, a new community development on which housing work started in January.
YTL Developments - Brabazon, Bristol

The old Brabazon hangar from which the community takes its name, whilst not listed, has been declared by Bristol City Council as a ‘valued building’, affording it some degree of added protection under any planning process, and the site developers have a proposal to turn it into a leisure/venue area:

Slightly surprising that it doesn't have a statutory listing, while the admittedly non-standard pill box next to it does* but Dave (who I know little - a fellow Yeovilian in exile) is co-responsible for the local list and I think that's one of his.

Adam

*In part this is because of the way listing works - there was a major investigation into WW2 defences about a decade ago and the 2014 date suggests that this was a result: Pillbox at Filton Airfield, Almondsbury - 1416298 | Historic England - there's been another into Cold War-era buildings and a lot of those are listed (see also 20th century pubs and gas infrastructure recently - both responses to losses and in the case of gas holders, decommissioning), but buildings associated with commercial aviation manufacture should probably be on the radar...

Which probably explains why I discovered last year that this gas holder in Gt Yarmouth is listed - I go past it occasionally with steel stuff for the nearby galvanising plant, and keep thinking the frame could be re-purposed to make an amazing house.

One entire floor might make a modest railway room - you’d hardly notice the large radius curves were not straights!

If the BOGG show could stay around end of Jan beginning of Feb I don't think there would be a problem with the temperature in the centre. I think the bigger problem would be car parking as for the Bristol show an adjacent field was used, not too bad in May but a different proposition Jan/Feb. I think the nearest rail station is Bristol Parkway, and the Bristol organisers always ran a vintage bus service to get attendees to and from the show.

Tony,
I assume the second shot is seaward facing ? judging by the paintwork condition !

Well I leave you alone for a week. gasometers and pill boxes ??The Brabazon was a plane built after the war at the same time they built an identical plane up north Chester / Liver pool ours was a propeller driven version. the one up north was a new fangled Jet engine driven one . They both flew. But guess who won the race .We won three of the massive hangers in the country. birth place of the Britannia, Bristol freighter, and the pe air resistance Concord. It is envisaged that there will be a station on site same as NEC .As the freight line goes past the front door. We originally planed the O gauge Show 30 years ago at Bristol Temple meads Our club rooms at the time. Around the shows that were current at the time . And all though winter in the west we get snow when there's a blue moon. And Christmas spending monies. Since then Warley NEC has shuffled the show scene, all shows moved away from there date. Our's became crowded and when we re invented the show in its present format we where told by the trade if we don't collide With Bolton they would come . So it was moved from Feb 4 (my wife's birthday peace at last ) Back into January . the leisure centre Thornbury is a big indoor bowling centre through the winter. and the show there is about the first allowed in the year as they all start playing outside . we are looking at all options and hoping to be back . Possibly a smaller foot print. as we organisers and our team of slaves to the hobby and are mostly retired. Bob T 85. Before you ask Temple meads is not an option any more. Stay safe

We visited Filton Airfield for the final air display. There were still Boeing 747s around and inside the Brabazon hanger which is truly huge. (And other aircraft too). It was a really interesting day, with all the Airbus chaps and chapesses giving demonstrations and lots going on. It's sad knowing that there will never be any flying from there in the future.

Even sadder is the loss to us enthusiasts of the Bristol January show. Just what was needed after the excesses of Christmas. We're truly grateful to you and your colleagues for the great times we've enjoyed in Bristol and hope to see them come around again. Some of those charities you supported will miss you as well. (I have a vested interest there too - I won the raffle three years ago and then a third prize last year. Well worth a fiver!)

Better get it sorted then if you are the winner cheaper to store those 747's here then . That was for an official receiver. They had one set of engines between them. He had sold the others. They shuffled the engines back by road every time they sold one. Cant put it in neutral and tow it .

Sad that Bristol Show has been lost, hopefully only temporarily loss, although if the government has its way with "social distancing measures" all such shows will be lost. Imagine trying to keep 6 feet away from everyone at any model railway event?

YTL own Brabazon hangers. these will become an entertainment 1 an entertainment arena 1300 seater 2 an exhibition hall , 3rd another but will have a permanent display also a feeder station out side linking to mainline utilizing the existing Avonmouth line. there is currently a delay on the rail track contract (they stated it was to many changes by YTL to spec) and consequently they just added another year to the completion date . i have had no contact for a year and suspect that the office for its development has closed/moved. as this Area 2 which is the second to be redeveloped was big enough to hold 4 -6 Concords with doors tall enough to bring arctics in to the venue it does lend its self to greater things. Down side not carpeted .local council is 2 Bristol has had its nose put out with this development so the road that comes across the runway has been granted planning permission on the biases its a bus lane. making motorway traffic do an extra 2.5 miles through a council housing estate.( cant wait till the first show and all these residents find out that the Bristol Lord mayor long gone has left them. the station is forms a boundary between South Glo's Council and Bristol. we are currently looking at Thornbury but they cant cover our time slot and if we did get it we have a transport problem with parking? If the same amount support the show 1500 we would not have the parking and have to use the over flow a field not good news in Jan. Have to have a tractor on call. Also if we take on this would it be supported in the same numbers as most shows now are running at least 50%down so the commitment is high. if we chose a smaller venue and 1500 turn up we would not here the end of it. and hope this explains some of the factors we are dealing with. Hope fully soon good news

Fingers crossed this was my favourite 7mm show it is missed by me and many others.
Marc
It was mine too. Enjoyed this show more than Telford. I was thinking that maybe the County Cricket ground would have the facilities to put the show on but it now sits inside the ULEZ so that would be a deterrent to many.
