Capitulation

The combined onslaught of Simon, Cookie and Dunk's gorgeous gauge one temtations has seen any resistance I may once have been able to muster melt away. I find myself desiring the Mawddwy Railway's coach number 1 (ex-LNWR). Seeing how little time it took RJR to build a whopping great diesel I reckon a small four wheel coach should only take about five minutes  ::), so though highly illogical in terms of what I already have on the go it should at least be do-able.  However the first stumbling block is a plan or set of dimensions to work to. There are a couple of very lovely photos in the Oakwood Press book on the Mawddwy, Van and Kerry Railways, but very little else to go on apart from the comment that it was scrapped at the start of the 1900's. I do have some drawings of coaches of similar syle and era, but if anyone could point me in the direction of further gen than I'd be a very happy and busy bunny.

There are more photos in a couple issues of  GWRJ It shouldn't be too difficult to scale if you know the length, after all they really are boxes on wheels!

Just checked issues 59 & 60, the coach pictures are in 59. you could build the little Manning Wardle as well?  ;)

Thank you Cynric, I have GWRJ 59 & 60, much thumbed. Of course I could always model the coach in it's grounded state and avoid all the faff of undergubbins, scale wheels and the like.  ;D

Manning Wardle too? With my hopeless work ethic? Gotta be kidding.

Great news - so long as it doesn't hamper the development of Morfa!

That's an inspired choice of prototype, I have often looked at pictures of that coach and I think it is an ideal subject for a larger scale model.

I'm sure I've got a pair of wheels that you could use, already "tickled" into you know what standards, and I would be surprised if I could not dig out some other useful bits for the undergubbins too. I shall have to take another look at the book - I'm sure I'll cope with that ;D

A really lovely subject and very appropriate to where you live too

Welcome to the large side, Neil.

I really hope this does not pull you away from the magnificence that Morfa will one day become, but if it does, well, there are very few subjects more suited to One32 modelling in a reasonable space as the Mawddwy in its pre-Cambrian (sounds geologically old, doesn't it?) days.

As for the coach, I think you will have to scale up from photos: I had a very fruitless search many years ago, although Philip Millard of the HMRS/LNWRS might be able to help you out with some information.

Luckily, the Manning, Wardle L was chosen for kit production in 1:32, had it been the K (Kerry) or Old I, I would have been tempted to build a brace... I suspect I am not alone in that respect.

Mind you, be careful of that Cook bloke: he'll have you doing Gauge 3 if you don't watch out!

I think Morfa's safe, in fact while I'm building some EM points this weekend I may even manage to move the head of nickel on a bit. After almost having my arm twisted into doing a Furness 2-2-2 WT in gauge one, a coach seems to be less dangerous. Coaches make nice trophies, locos need somewher to run.

Are you casting aspersions my good man  ;D (no takers yet though)

I'm not done yet...
No info back on the coach size yet Neil, I'll keep chasing

Hi Neil,

Steve is quite right to twist your arm over this. You have said before that this is the one loco you would love to have a model of, so it makes sense to build one. If you were to build one, it would make sense to do it in a larger scale as it is a small prototype, and it would work a treat in 1:32 scale, as you could use 7mm scale mechanisms. It could still go on a display case, or you could build a small light railway type of layout, once you have built the coach. After all, a Slaters PO wagon or two, a couple of Simon's GWR bodies on a John Dale chassis, plus the Slaters MR van, and you would be in business. The Furness did sell some of those well tanks off to the WCPR, after all, so they could have ended up on the Abergwynant Light Railway, or similar...

I have uploaded a small trackplan, 12 x 2'6", to show you that it is possible - look at Simon's spotty siding as another example.

OOO er is there some thing yous two's aint tellin us :shit:
What has the precursor to N gauge got to do with it? ;)

I ain't his, by the way: that's one thing he keeps getting wrong. I am so feckless and lacking in trustworthiness that I am incorruptible, lacking even the basic honesty required to stay bribed (but I will happily take the money).
That and the fact that I am a colossal pervert. No form of sexual depravity is too low for me. Animal, vegetable or mineral -- I'll do anything to anything.

   Just had to check I was still on a model railway Forum... :shit:

It does remind me of a poster I saw of Tony B.Liar around 1997, and someone had added a speech bubble for him, saying "If it's got a spine, I'll sh@g it..."

Prophetic words...........

Ok chaps, back where we were, thanks to Cookie and a forward request to Mike Williams I now have some dimensions that I can add to the photos to produce a credible model of the Mawddwy Railway coach (hurrah), unfortunately it'll have to take its turn in the to do list so I'm unlikely to be cutting plasticard this side of Christmas (boo), but I hope to make a start in the new year (hurrah).
