You're a bad man Ozzy (but more pictures please!).

Out of interest, does the SDK include coupling and connecting rods?  I've never been that happy with the laminated etches that come as standard, so some better looking cast rods could well see my wallet twitching.  :)

I would go for the SDK over the cost of etching bits you cant see  :))  :))

That's one less set of smokebox detailing bits I could sell then....  :))

I managed to grab a couple of hours of "me" time this evening.  It wasn't long enough to get my stuff out and do some modelling, but I did manage to fire up the TurboCAD and make a start on this....

[attachimg=1]

I'd forgotten how much fun drawing stuff is.  :)  There are a few more things to do to this particular drawing, but the basics are there.  Once I have some other stuff to etch, I'll send this off too and see how it comes out.  Then I'll have to decide if I'm going to proceed with this smokebox interior madness, or glue the door firmly shut!

By the way, when do you expect your tubeplate etches back?

I'm hoping to get my greasy mits on the fresh metal by the end of the week.. very much looking forward to it..!

Dan thought that a photo of Cadbury with the smokebox door open might be a bit too much to ask...  so here is a web page with the next best thing:-

http://www.6023.co.uk/photo_gallery/Boi ... ot_aug10(1)022.html

Dan, in this photograph the restoration has used the bifurcated superheater elements, the type that would have been fitted to Cadbury when the engine had the single chimney and code HC boiler - I feel that with the late date of fitting the code HD boiler then Cadbury would have had the later, single-return-bend, elements of larger diameter tube.

Is it really over 5 years since my last update on here? Crikey! Anyway, I'm pleased to say, since moving house a couple of years ago, I now have a dedicated work room. Crazy train driver shift patterns still conspire against me (I'm at work now until 01:08....), but I've been grabbing the odd hour here and there on various unfinished projects, including this one....

20160710_142538.jpg

Recent progress has seen the etched beading removed from the tender body (to be replaced with half-round wire) and the forming of said body from the flat etch, into its 3-dimensional form.

I've also been working on assembling the loco cab - the roof is pretty much the right shape and will conform properly once soldered to the cab spectacle plate and sides (driver's side still to do). A couple of days ago, I folded-up the flat footplate etch and will add the detail overlays to the top and sides as soon as some more spare time allows. I need to snap off the two inner rear splashers once I've establised the outer ones (to cater for the fire iron tunnel), are sitting at the correct height.

So, just the one picture for now, but I feel very motivated by my recent activity!

Even as it looks there, you can tell it's going to be marvellous!

Great to see it back in modern times..

I've been working on a few CAD projects of late, but a little workbench time here and there these past few weeks has seen the driver's cab side fitted to the spectacle plate, along with the roof....

The raised angle around the perimeter of the roof was a bit of a mare, but I got there in the end. I cocked-up the original firebox wrapper by forming the shoulder bends slightly out of alignment. Of course, this didn't sink in until after I'd completely soldered the wrapper to the firebox formers....

These days, JLTRT kits often have the option of a resin smokebox/boiler/firebox and as luck would have it, my friend Richard said he had the resin boiler in his "Castle" kit, so he let me have the etch from his - thanks Richard. Saturday night saw the new wrapper carefully formed and soldered to the formers, whilst this evening's job was cleaning things up. I still need to fill the internal front corners with copious amounts of solder in order to be able to file and shape the external front corners, but that will have to wait for another day, as it's time for bed now.

Hi Dan

Another convert to the no solder school of metallurgy I see:thumbs::)

When I have to file firebox shoulders, I form a length of 1mm copper wire to be a snug fit all round the inside of the wrapper/front joint. It is this that I solder in with lots of solder to provide a better mechanical fixing.

Hi Richard

I think you may have told me of the copper wire technique in the past and it's a very good idea. I'll have a rummage in the garage this evening, as I'm sure I have a few reels of twin & earth cable knocking around.

Hi Dan,

Wire is ok but you may find it better to use a bit off the spare chassis etches, 28thou usually, filled to fit snugly into the curve, double up if it is a very large curve like the Fowler moguls? There is less space to fill with solder and it may save you hunting in your garage.

That's a neat idea Ian, though I think I've missed the boat on this occasion. The top front of the firebox is already three laminations (as supplied), but I can't help thinking another wouldn't have been a bad idea. It would be a bit of a faff to add another layer of etch now, so I'll go down the copper wire route this time and bear your suggestion in mind for my next steam loco build.

I've spent a couple of evenings profiling the leading edges of the firebox. Although I was happy with my filing and polishing efforts yesterday, I felt the radius was just too small once I'd finished, especially the top leading edge and corners. I was being cautious I suppose, because the bottom of the firebox follows the curve of the boiler, but the radius is only 1mm or so larger.

Anyway, I had another go at it this evening and am pretty pleased with the results....

20160825_225906.jpg

I'm inclined to leave it at that, but what do others think please?

It certainly looks much better for having been profiled and as a reminder, this it what it looked like before I attacked it with files and Brasso....

That's all for now - more updates as and when.
