Hi guy's, i managed to do a little more on my signal box over the last couple of days. Hope to take some more pics at the weekend. I also managed to do some work on the siphon G, still a little more work on the underframe to do and handrails etc then ready for primer. My GUV (westdale) is ready for some nice weather so i can get some primer on that too.
PZ station pilot- MMP 08, i have made a little progress but nothing worth taking any pics of yet. Hope everyone is happy modelling.
PS Phill, hows that Terminus coming on :?:
Dan, hows Rifleman progressing (bet its further forward than Buccaneer  )

Hi Rob (and everyone else!)

There has been some progress with Rifleman, namely making a new set of S7 split-axles and making a start on the loco crew figures.

I started putting one of the bogies back together last week and here's a picture of the components at the start of the session....
SNV33057.JPG[/attachment:13q0669j]
Because of the finer S7 flanges, I wanted to incorporate some form of compensation on the front axles,so I drew up some artwork and had this simple rocking device etched....
SNV33037.JPG[/attachment:13q0669j]
The unit is pinned/glued in position, so after the positioning is marked and the appropriate holes drilled, the "wings" each side with the bearings in are snapped off (it wouldn't rock otherwise!). The narrowness of the rocking unit is simply to allow for the fact that these are split-axles and I didn't want to run the risk of the unit bridging the insulating gap and shorting things out! Once we're able to add more pictures, I'll post a sequence relating to the installation of these, if anyone's interested.

Here's the current state of play with one of the crew figures....
SNV33053.JPG[/attachment:13q0669j]
He's received quite a lot of attention from the razor saw and a selection of files so far and looks a whole lot different from the bus driver figure he started life as. More pictures to follow, as and when.

I would be interested in the installation :D
Would you like me to move this to the 'Action'? seeing as it is going to be ongoing

I managed to do some work to "Rifleman" today, namely, getting the "A" end bogie to the same stage as the "B" end.

Here are the parts laid out ready....
SNV33091.JPG[/attachment:25yu2ens]

Here's the build sequence for the rocking axle units....
SNV33031.JPG[/attachment:25yu2ens]

The leading base plate pivot arm is part folded, to clear a protrusion on the resin bogie frame....
SNV33032.JPG[/attachment:25yu2ens]
The brass pins are used quite a bit during the bogie build and the bearings will be needed temporarily.

With the base plate in position, the bearings are inserted (from the inside), through the wings in the base plate and into the bearing holes in the bogie frame....
SNV33033.JPG[/attachment:25yu2ens]

This locks the base plate in position and enables the locating holes to be drilled....
SNV33034.JPG[/attachment:25yu2ens]
The holes are countersunk to allow for gluing later.

The pivot arms can now be folded up through 90 degrees and strengthened with solder....

Here?s the actual rocking part under construction, along with some 3/16? I/D brass tube?.
SNV33040.JPG[/attachment:zsieouzc]

Both components are now formed?.
SNV33036.JPG[/attachment:zsieouzc]

As this was a test etch, I temporarily fitted an axle, just to make sure the rocking part would actually line up with the bearing holes in the wings, thus ensuring the correct ride height?.
SNV33037.JPG[/attachment:zsieouzc]
Everything is as it should be, but obviously, it can?t rock at the moment, so it?s off with the wings?.
SNV33038.JPG[/attachment:zsieouzc]

Now it?s time to add the pivots for the rocker. One of the brass pins is inserted through the holes in the pivot arms and soldered in position?.
SNV33093.JPG[/attachment:zsieouzc]
Any excess pin is removed and filed down.

The middle portion is then removed and the stubs filed back to about 1.5mm and de-burred?.
SNV33094.JPG[/attachment:zsieouzc]SNV33040.JPG SNV33036.JPG SNV33037.JPG SNV33038.JPG SNV33093.JPG SNV33094.JPG

The base plate and rocker can now be united, but this will only be temporary?.
SNV33095.JPG[/attachment:2krbu9kh]

The final job on the front axles is to scribe some vertical lines either side of the bearing holes and add some 2.5mm x 1mm channel?.
SNV33041.JPG[/attachment:2krbu9kh]
SNV33097.JPG[/attachment:2krbu9kh]
These lengths of channel were superglued and pinned in position and provide the bearings with a nice vertical movement, once the original bearing holes are elongated. The slots in the channel allow the pick-ups from the bearings to pass through.

The base plate can now be pinned in position, with a dab of superglue applied to the holes on top of the bogie?.
SNV33098.JPG[/attachment:2krbu9kh]
SNV33099.JPG[/attachment:2krbu9kh]
The excess pins are trimmed and filed down.

The Delrin sprocket (which I had to thin down) and rocker can now be slid on the axle and the axle inserted into the bogie. The bearings are then added and the pick-ups inserted from inside and soldered in position, before cleaning-off flush with the bearing?s outer face?.
SNV33100.JPG[/attachment:2krbu9kh]
It was a bit fiddly, but I got there eventually!

The rear axle was much easier to install?.
SNV33101.JPG[/attachment:20ag7cqt]

The bearings for the centre axles originally looked like this?.
SNV32907.JPG[/attachment:20ag7cqt]
They were going to be sprung and the wire was supposed to pass through the little loop, but after messing around for a while, I realised this wasn?t going to work, so they were modified to this?.
SNV33096.JPG[/attachment:20ag7cqt]
The hinge-like things are just guides for these bearings, but also act as a junction for the pick-up wires to be soldered to. These were just superglued in position to start with, but I found they kept coming loose, so I drilled a couple of holes through these and the bogie frame, inserted some short lengths of pin from the outside and soldered them to the inside - they're not gonna fall off now! The centre wheels are not sprung any more, but are able to move up and down under their own weight and hopefully, provide some much needed (and probably intermittent), electrical pick-up?.
SNV33102.JPG[/attachment:20ag7cqt]

Speaking of pick-ups, here?s one half of the bogie wiring?.
SNV33103.JPG[/attachment:20ag7cqt]

Finally, everything's done and both bogies seem to run well?.
SNV33105.JPG[/attachment:20ag7cqt]
I put the centre castings on as a temporary measure, but they have to come off soon, so I can refit the brake rigging. I need to get some N/S strip from Kettering next weekend, before this can happen. :)

That?s all for now.

Regards

Dan

Thats neatly done for the rocking axle  are you going to need some spacers for the axles?
THis reminds me, I must order some handrail knobs and finish my bogie

Dan Randall

Thanks for the replies chaps - it's good to be back. :)

Regarding axle spacers:

Rear axles - I moved out the bearings to eliminate any side play and secured them with a small dob of PVA.

Front axles - These have a little sideplay (probably no more than 1 - 1.5mm), as without it, they wouldn't be able to rock.

Centre axles - These can move sideways as far as the back to back over the bearings will allow them, if you see what I mean?

The front and rear axles will be staying as they are, but I may have to revisit the centre axles once I've built a test track with some points in and studied how the bogies behave.

How long until the sound units go in? You can come and give it a go on my test track! Actually it would be an incentive to lay the track

In theory, not long at all. The problem is, my only piece of S7 track is just eleven sleepers long, which will accommodate a Western bogie, but will only allow it to travel about half its length....!

I need to make a test track of my own - funnily enough, I've just been looking at the Exactoscale and C&L web sites to see if either of them do ready-to-plonk S7 track - they don't.

I have some 8ft x 4 1/2 inch strips of ply stashed away, so I'll probably make myself an 8ft test track soon. As it's only a test track, I might just use a few widely-spaced copperclad sleepers, rather than waste pastic sleepers and chairs.

When you've got your test track up and running, let me know and if my Western is a runner (which I hope it will be!), I'll certainly pay you a visit. :)

You and me :D DCC has passed me by so far but sound could tip me over, as TBH the other 'features' of DCC mean nothing to me.

My wife's digital camera is able to record moving images/sound, so it's certainly something I'd like to share with other hydraulically minded folk. :)

I'm a bit of a twat when it comes to technology though, so how easy is it to "You Tube" stuff?

Very easy :D I have a digital camcorder - another reason to try it on my (yet to be built) track
I think you can embed youtube in this forum as well.

It must be easy, cos I can do it :D , I would like to take some film of my layout in the summer & add real loco sound  ..........
but I think it is probably beyond my very limited technological capability
