Dapol 08

Just installed Paul Chetter's "other version" of the Dapol Class 08 ProtoDrive sound project in my second loco (Green/Wasp Stripes) and I like it even better than the first one! (see post #107).

I think it's great to have available 2 slightly different sounding locos of the same class.....thanks Paul

Thanks both! Food for thought there. Expensive food...;)
Not really, a sound equipped Dapol 08 from Hattons is £339, my 08's cost me £169, plus £92 for the sound decoders & £5 for the LS - £266.
Bit of a bargain methinks.

Wot ho Arty - does this shouty shunter wonderfulness suggest that a cunning new plan is afoot - I do hope so!

There is something about that black livery in particular that appeals.

Perhaps someone will build a good 1/32 model one day, they are singular looking machines.

Happy New Year etc, nice to see you around the old place again….

Hi Simon, Happy New Year to you.

My favourite diesel the 08, I had a Hornby sound equiped one in 4mm but not impressed with it's voice.

I have a G3 one on the go (and a G3 class 25 pending, the plan with that is to power it with a 4 stroke SC engine driving a brushless generator etc)

The Dapol 08 is very good, contrary to all the fluff it has spawned over the past years and a bargain even at £199. I have a couple of Heljan big diesels, so need to build something to run them on ( and win the lottery to buy a couple of sound cards !)

I do have a Bachmann 04 in 1/32, and a 1/32 Teddy Bear, so an 08 would be nice to accompany them.

Trouble is I've got too many projects as usual, and I do keep an eye on Western Blunder.

I quite agree, it is a bargain. Just poor timing and a bad turn of phrase from me possibly!

Interesting article on dismantling a Dapol 08 by Paul Chetter to fit sound and upgrade lighting.

I have two green to do for myself, luckily one is unnumbered.
Plan is to fit SWD sound in one and Howes in the other , or just possibly a Zimo chip, but not sure yet.

I have just taken a knife and various other small tools to mine... gone are the top lights (and the bit of pcb to go with them!), the centre lights have been removed and the plug on the pcb modified to give me red/white on the end in the direction of travel on dc. When it eventually gets a decoder they will be on at both ends permanently.
I am also working on the cab doors, and I may yet pare off the long strap hinges...

If you go DCC then you can have the red and white lower lights on all the time with a simple function remap.

There's no need to hack anything about.

Does anyone know of a source of good little two and three pin connectors? I have gone down the SWD route and have replaced the Dapol apology of a PCB with the ESU 51968 adaptor. I would like to retain the ability to disconnect the body from the chassis.
