Day to Day duties of an 08 shunter: info needed

Although I'm a gauge 3 modeller, I'm also a member of the 7mm section of my club, and bought myself a Dapol 08, planning to have it push around some wagons. Although I know it's a 'shunter' I've no real idea what they did each day. Are there books available on this? To narrow it down a bit I've seen photos of them round the East Anglian coast, or Bodmin and Wadebridge looks an interesting possibility.

In the 60s and 70s, St Blazey outstationed an 08 at St. Austell to primary shunt the goods yard. Wagon load traffic was still being carried at that time. It also shunted the Motorail. I have a photo of the 08 shunting the loaded car carriers out of the loading siding at St, Austell, then via the up goods loop onto the up main wrong line. The 08 would then go into the old up fish dock next to the Signal box. The train loco then shunted the coaches out of the up back siding then onto the car carriers via the up goods loop. Class 52s were used predominantly, but I did see a Class 42 once. At weekends, when not required, the 08 lived in the fish dock, under the watchful eye of the signalman. D4007 was the regular.

Another duty was the Wenford line clay. They worked between Boscarne Juntion and Wenford dries. Type2s worked the loaded wagons between Boscarne Junction and Bodmin Road, primarily I guess because of the severe gradient. After the withdrawal of passenger services on the Padstow line, Type 2s worked the trip out to Wadebridge. I’ve only seen 25s in photos. The whole line was then worked as a long siding from Bodmin Road. I once saw the returning 08 between Lostwithiel and Par, light engine.

Thanks Paul,
Boscarne Junction appeals, as I impulse bought an A C Railbus which was being sold at a big discount by Heljan at an exhibition. However I guess the scene you described would be after 1967?

Yes Geoff, post 1967. Photos from the era of the AC Railbus show Class 04s on the Wenford line. They were not that successful. According to M Messenger in his Bodmin and Wadebridge 1834-1983 (Twelveheads), 08 350 took over in 1968; i.e. post the passenger service. However, it’s your railway and you are intitled to ‘bend’ history to suit yourself. During the Railbus era on the Bodmin North service, photos show single railcars on the Bodmin Road - General - Wadebridge-Padstow service. Class 22s would be used in the 60s, maybe up until 1971 when the final members were withdrawn. I saw 6338 at St Blazey and Par in November 1971. Class 25s were already around earlier that year.

I shall more than likely be spending most of the night on ours 'pushing' around wagons making up trains in excess of 1500t in some cases!! Not bad really for a little thing that is in excess of 50 years old in most cases!!
