The GC tank loco is ... a class 9L
Thanks Tony, I stand corrected. The GC tank loco is ( nerdy pedant mode on !)...actually a class 9L ( C14 ). On the first photo you can see the capping strip that ran along the bunker top going all the way to the cab opening as on this class the bunker and water tanks were wider than the cab. On the 9L the cab platework was flush with the tanks / bunker sides.
On the second photo the water filler is at the front of the tank....on the 9K ( C13 ) the filler was nearer the cab than the tank front....( pedant mode off !!)
Cheers Tony.
Tony, your question could just as easily be applied to a photo of a nut and bolt... tsk, tsk. Looks to me that the engine in your picture has a turbo mounted on top of the block, so what is the class of loco had the engine in your photo?
As I guessed the last "engine" from Fraser I shall be posting a new puzzle later tonight... or rather, in the sense of expanding the possibilities, I shall post a mystery photo of a kettle and a mystery photo of am oiler. Sorry, I have no photos of sparkies.
Hatcham Iron Works possibly? Or something from Whitehaven?

Clue? A classic design, this particular engine is going to celebrate a centenary in a few years.

My Hatcham Ironworks google session led me in a roundabout way to an interesting photo resource website featuring the work of Hugh Llewelyn:
