Do you know what year the class 25 pic was taken & the loco number ? , That pic could be the last train ever to go down the Ilfracombe branch.

I'm pretty sure that it's 25063 on Weds 26th February 1975 carrying a party of engineers surveying the line & buildings for demolition after the failed attempt to preserve the line.

Some lovely images Al ;D  , I particularly Like the first one of the GFYE North British

Cheers Phill
I wish I'd been old enough to have seen warships, hymeks and nbl 22s running although I was lucky enough to have become an enthusiast before the westerns were all withdrawn. The only nbls I've seen were at Barry scrap line in 1977

I only managed one Warship (807 Caradoc) in service & the 22's had all gone :(...........but I did manage most of the Wezzys & the surviving Hymeks.............I still remember a shabby looking Hymek coming through Exeter St Davids towards the end, which seemed quite rare as most were languishing in & around Old Oak at the time & didnt seem to get out of London much :)

I missed all Hymeks and Warships bar the odd one, cant really recall seeing them. I also missed the early withdrawals of the wezzies. I would have loved to see those and Warships. Its a shame a class 22 was'nt saved as i never saw any other than in books/photos etc.

Hi Al, great pics  thanks for posting. The western on the scrap line at Laira is D1032 Western Marksman. Arriving at Laira Jan 1973 awaiting for a decision as to whether repaire or withdraw.

Hi Al :)

Thanks for sharing some more pics with us ;)....the Laira scrap line ones bring back memory's for me  , I used to have to wait around those scraplines while my older brother bunked the shed (I was too young for shed bunking then :( :D ) . We used to get day returns form Newqauy (Western hauled of course  ) to Pymouth & then a bus to Laira.........much more fun than staying on the beach with mum & dad :))

Thanks Again

Hi Phill,
I remember a friend who managed to get some number plates off a Hymek but then found them too heavy to carry away!

Hello Al,

Some cracking photos there.

I can narrow down a few more identities for you:-

MSYP 1000 with headcode 1H55 - Swindon built example in the number range D1018-D1023, but not D1020.
the length of the name plate suggests it could be D1018 or D1019.

BFYE 1000 with headcode 1A83 - Crewe built example with what looks like the side to side wiper experiment in front of the driver's windscreen, so possibly D1053, D1055, D1058 or D1072. Location is near Defiance Platform just west of Saltash.

MSYP 1000 with headcode 1C39 at Newton Abbot - not sure whether it is a Crewe built or Swindon built loco. If it's a Swindon loco, possibly D1024.

D1013 with red route availability dot below the number plate and no data panel, so possibly not long after being fitted with Dual Brakes/AWS at it's overhaul in 1968. Location, possibly Swansea.

Cheers,

Roger

Please tell, what are the visible differences?

thank you, Graham

Graham,

The two main differences between Swindon and Crewe built locos which help in identification is in the position of the front end live wire warning flashes and whether or not there is a small bracket below the driver's and secondman's cab side windows.

Swindon - front end live wire warning flashes are placed noticeably lower than the "Crewe" position and in differing positions. No bracket below cab side windows.

Crewe - front end live wire warning flashes are generally placed almost directly below the top handrail. Bracket below cab side windows.

Compare the warning flash positions in the photos of Westerns 1H55 & 1C39.

For the cab side bracket, see the view of D1060 on the Laira scrap line.

Within the Swindon built batch there are several groups of differing positions for the warning flashes:-
1 - D1000, D1002, D1003.
2 - D1001.
3 - D1004-D1017.
4 - D1018-D1023.
5 - D1024-D1029.

Crewe built locos have their warning flashes in a more standardized position directly below the end of the top hand rail.

Once you start looking you can find a lot of detail differences which will narrow down and identify a particular Western.

Other detail differences that come to mind are the presence or not of headboard brackets, windscreen wiper position, windscreen wiper experiments, air vent modifications, sand box cover modifications, collision damage repairs, and then there are dents and scrapes from general service life.

Have a look through a few books, you will be surprised what differences you can pick out.
