Does Anyone Know Where or When?

Err no attachment, again ;)

Either way not to worry, if you think it's #38 then that didn't carry a 107 boiler until 1961 which is much too late for this photo and by that time had a double chimney. However, #38 did carry a 94HP (round dome) from 1955 - 1958 but a 94A (streamlined dome) before and after. It's not after 1959 as a double chimney was fitted then and given that one of the coaches in the second shot is maroon I'd be looking at the 55 - 58 period.

Round domes are further forward than streamlined and slightly taller and it does on the face of it look like it's centred over the middle boiler ring at the front of the taper rather than further back between the two tapered rings.

60038 was based at Gateshead 53-56, Darlington 56-57 and back to Gateshead 56-57 then to Holbeck 57-60.

Given that 'The Queen of Scots' changed engines at Leeds; Copley Hill and Neville Hill are the two sheds down to supply engines on this train. It could be that #38 from Holbeck is standing in but exceedingly rare if at all to be honest, the evidence does not stack up I'm afraid.

However 60053 was based at Copley Hill from 5/54 to 9/57 and Coupe News has her listed only twice during that stay on the down The Queen of Scots on dates 5th May 55 and 4th Apr 56, it doesn't list any other dates and whilst not exhaustive is pretty comprehensive, example :- http://www.semgonline.com/coach/coupe/pull_ciwl-news026.pdf
from page 14 list engines used, dates, trains and which service.

60038 is also listed but only on trains North of Leeds, none south, which fits her shed allocations.

The Queen of Scots left London at 11:50 AM so how long does it take to get to Retford in steam days, 90-120mins? which puts the time around 13:20 - 13:50 which fits the sun angle a bit better.

Thanks Mick.

Good analysis for which many thanks. The section photo is on my copy of this thread - it's a bit before your "improved" version of mine. I know I saw Gateshead locos at Kings Cross - they were always filthy - but I'd not try to argue with your references here. In any event, my interpretation of the loco number is only that, an interpretation.

I now know a lot more about the photos than I did. I'll add this data to the info against these two photos.

Thank you.

Brian, yes, Gateshead locos are quite frequent at Kings X, but not on The Queen of Scots which changed engines at Leeds ;)

Haymarket engines worked the Glagow - Edinburgh - Newcastle section.
Neville Hill worked the Newcastle - Leeds section.
Copley Hill worked the Leeds - London section.

Heaton was the back up shed for Neville Hill on the Leeds - Newcastle section
Neville Hill was the back up for Copley Hill on the Leeds - London section.

For a Gateshead engine to turn up on The Queen of Scots would entail the Heaton engine to fail and then the Neville Hill and Copley Hill engines to fail, on top of that, Leeds is a reversal so the train would have to be drawn out, engine removed, turned and put back on for the London run, I'm not a fancy man of the pidgeons, dogs or horses; but even those odds are one to be wary of ;)

I'd forgotten how interesting the LNER was / is, I do need an A1 in my life I've just decided, must finish this DA one though first

Well.... I know when - 28th October 1983 when Steph and I were on the Cumbrian Mountain Pullman. However, I've lost details of where.

Clues: certainly the Settle and Carlisle. I've identified some shots at Appleby already.

Any help with these will be greatly appreciated.

Richard - Here's that signage enlarged. It says "Fellside Engineering" although it's difficult to see in greater detail as focus is iffy.

Perhaps it helps?

I looked 'em up at Companies House which gives the address as Maidstone!
