EHLR wagons

Hi all
I don't know if it is lockdown or senior moment but I have hit a bit of 'modeller's block' (a variation of author's block) when things don't work. I can't face the small details on Sankey and too wet to paint. the KESR coach. Something relaxing needed, so- - - - - EHLR wagons.
These are reputed to be ex Manchester Ship canal as was Sankey.
When they arrived at Edge Hill they must have been well worn and from the few photos looks like by then no two are the same.
A pile of plastic strip and sheet, a simple cutting jig and away.
The prototype.

The cutting Jig.

The first chassis and some bits for the 2nd.

The wheels are Slater's 2'8'' open spoke wagon.

Hello all
I have been asked on the GOG forum how I arrived at the dimensions. I have repeated it here as someone may find it useful for other projects where there are no drawings.

Estimation is how I got there.
Look at the photo (in first post) the one is next to a brake van. Now the standard height to buffer centre is 3'6'' so the top of the chassis must be about 3'2''. The wheels are then about 2'9'' which is why I have used Slaters 2'10'' and wheel base about the same or a little less. The first photo showing them in use on the MSC. From the workers I estimate a total height of about 6'0''. Overall length about twice the wheel base. The body plank width is estimated to be about 8 to 9'' with support rails between the chassis and body being about 4''.
There are no kit bits in these wagons. All is cut from suitable plastic strip, Plastruct or similar.
There are the 3 plank wagons I have started and a 2 plank version which looks to be a bit shorter and of cause lower. I think there may have been a couple of 'standard' wagons to start with, but bashed, crashed and patched over time even more so than wagons on the main line.
I hope this helps. I do have several more photos, found by searching EHLR and MSC on the web.

Hi @Allen M
Interesting items.
I'd be interested in seeing the prototype photos, but your thumbnails just link back to the Gauge O website, and I am unable to access them.

Cheers

Hi Jan and all
They opened for me so I assumed they would for all. Here they are again.

Hope this helps. I had copied the whole item from the GOG forum so I assume that must be why the problem.

Thanks, @Allen M
That works now. I thought the brake van looked a bit GER, and now I’ve seen the full print, I’m even more convinced.

Cheers

Hi Allen,
Its one of our own kits. The photo to is of the prototype so its a bit rough round the edges. The kit can build both the 9ft and the 10ft3 WB versions. We haven't got any in at the moment as the ends are 3D printed and I'm waiting delivery of a new printer. It should be with me by the middle of next month, fingers crossed.

Hi all
Is this what the wagon works would have delivered? A complete set of cut timber.
This for the second wagon.

The 2 long strips are for the strapping & corner plates. I assume in the real world they would also be delivered pre-formed and drilled, as well a set of bolts and/or rivets.

More as construction continues.

Hi all
The WELR works took a brake from wagons to make face masks.
Allen in a Mask.JPG
Some have suggested that it improves my looks.:D
However I am now back to the wagons,
The chassis with the bearers. Both should be continuous but I ran of strip (as you do) but it won't be seen under the floor.
15 - Chassis with bearers.JPG
Adding the strapping bolts. Holes are drilled and plastic rod pushed through, dabbed with solvent and allowed to dry. Using a bit of packing cut to length with nail clippers (the tipe used on your hands) then lightly rub over.

Soon be ready for final assembly.

Hi all,
a bit more progress at last.
The first 3 plank wagon is nearly there, Only requires couplings and paint.

The details. There are 82 'bolts' through the body, 4 stretcher 'bolts' and 4 coupling screw holes. Every one is drilled through (plus 2 in the wrong place which had to be plugged and re-drilled) making a total of 96. Except for the wheels and screws for coupling is cut from raw material as described in previous post.

Hello all
Into the paint shop for the first paint fix., a coat of 'plastic primer' form that well known car/cycle parts shop.

If you look closely it can be seen that the RH end of the 3 plank side has a bashed corner plate an a bit missing from the top plank. I managed to move the joint when part set and caused the damage. So leave it and add a rust patch when weathering, cut of the top plank then 'to suit'. I call it modelling in service damage, see the prototype in the first post, the LH wagon in front of the steam shovel.

I assume that you are linking to photos that are hosted elsewhere rather than posting them directly to your thread. This is all we see:

This is avoided by posting photos and text here rather than copy and paste from one site to another!

Hello Dave
Thanks for the report of no photos. I have been doing a copy & paste from the GOG site. As I could see everything, even when going back, I assumed it worked OK.
First the 2 missing photos.
19 - Full height side.JPG
20 - A lick of paint high side.JPG

Now the new one. The ironwork has received black paint with the damaged corner given a bit of rust and the broken plank as bare wood.
22 - ready for service.JPG

Next is to build 2 more,1 x 3 plank put slightly different width planks and 1 x 2 plank. They will ultimately receive loads and weathering in yellow/orange iron ore colour.

Hi all
Back on the Wagon. :) No not the temperance version but the EHLR.;)
In post 6 is showed a set of cut parts for the second wagon. I assembled the ends and sides the tried to drill for the rivets and they fell apart. Tried a different solvent and the same again. Into the bin. I don't know the manufacture or source of the plastic, I think unbranded from an exhibition stand somewhere.
Then went off to none modelling things.
After calming down new sides & ends from Plasticard and on to complete as with the first, then a third with only 2 planks.

Next is the couplings then paint.
