End of Headcodes and Start of 'Dominos'

Hi All,

Just trying to plan out the detailing of the 37 (although it wont get the work done on it just yet), and, as always, something new (for me) cropped up (always learning)...

I hope to have a split headcode visitor to Down Ampney

Does anyone know when BR started to phase out reporting headcodes (the headcode boxes for diesels) and blanked headcodes with 'dominos' started to appear (i.e. for 37's).....was it 1973 onwards?

A bit later really; 1 Jan 1976 was the official date from which headcodes didnt need to be displayed, after that was the '0000' period as headcodes were wound to that display and disabled. 

Dominoes had first appeared in either '72 or '73, but only as an experiment (and then only on Deltic '9 AFAIK); after the 1976 changes though they were applied more widely until plating-over became the preferred solution.  HTH.

As the 37 is blue and the layout is circa 1965-76, then the loco would be running in the latter part of that period (so I could just squeeze it in with a bit of modeller's licence! )

It might be that domino's only really came to the fore in 1977/8 after the Deltics, and then, of course, D1023's Feb '77 run on the ECML required the modification. Can't recall any others with dominos before then.... but it's sending me scuttling off to look! :wave:

Err.. what was I drinking last night D1023's run was 20/11/76, ofc, but still not found any pics of other classes with dominos prior to April 1977..... :wave:

Now you have me wondering!! I felt sure that they started earlier ???

I could tweek things with modellers' licence yet I would like to stay within 1965-76 (that's long enough)!!.
