There's a guy on another forum that I'm on who is posting a thread about building an Aster kit with links to pages and pages of Flicker photos with no explanations or captions about what is going on. I think that so much of the potential value is being lost that I wanted to post a link to an Aster build thread on this site to show him how it should be done - but I have two questions .....

1) Since the thread here is in the members section - is it OK to post a link to it on another site?

2) Would the link even work on another site - since it is neccessary to be a member here to be able to view members section content.

Many thanks

John

Hi,

I've no problem with you posting links either on other forums or to other forums, I recognise that this forum can't be all things to all people and in the spirit of helping people then posting links is ok in my book.

However as you suspect (point 2) I don't think the link would work. They'd get the following page.

Obviously I'd like to think he'd find it worthwhile to join and if with a bit of luck contribute. However if he is reluctant to do so then all I can suggest is that you find another thread in a more accessible public area. It might not quite be a relevant as the original one you were linking to but could illustrate the points you were trying to make.

I hope that helps and please don't hesitate if there are other questions.

Regards

Adrian

Hi Adrian - many thanks for that - it is as I suspected. I will take your advice and look for another example elsewhere - although I doubt I will find anything to match the kind of quality on here to illustrate my point! .... :)

Hi John,

Off at a tangent....may we please have a link to the flickr photos and/or the initial thread?

Thank you,

Richard

He says he's going to provide an "overall build presentation" at the end - but I thought it was just so much better the way it was done here - as an ongoing story with explanations of all the problems, techniques and discussions etc. ......

A fascinating and interesting build, I know they say a picture is worth a thousand words but there is a lot to be said for a few words to stitch a narrative together and in my humble opinion I'd agree with your earlier comment that you'd struggle to find a better thread. Hopefully you can encourage him to join.

One can quite easily add narrative text to Flickr images, it does mean that you have to open each picture page to read what's written mind, which is it's downfall over a single page in a thread on a forum like this, however text can be added.

I tend to find that people who just put up images with no text or block loading text or simply the original img_nnnn tend not to be the detailed narrative types, so I wouldn't expect something like Steve wrote, who I think can be fairly described as one of those types who likes to write and takes the time to write what's going on.

In short, for some people, spending what can often amount to a great deal of time, detailing what they did and how, is not at the top of their food chain

Nice choice of engine BTW ;)

There's nothing with which I disagree in everything written here so far. However, for a bear of little brain, like me, with no experience of the prototype or model steam locos in general this succession of pictures, good though they are, is of absolutely no help in understanding what is going on. In fact, having looked at the first half dozen and decided they told me nothing I closed the window and arrived back here.

I read almost everything on WT because it is informative and even if not in my major line of interest (BR steam) adds to my knowledge every day. I've read the info about the improvements to the Aster live steam "Castle" (or is it a "King"?) avidly because this has helped me understand the travails of running live steam. It's also great that details of builds and problems in builds are shown and described. In some cases these repeat previous info but I often find myself saying "I'd forgotten about that". Thanks to all on WT for your careful descriptions of what is going on and long may it continue.
