Foamboard - glue?

Yesterday in Aberystwyth I came away from the craft shop with foamboard rather than the cardboard I had intended to use for a Euro-tram microbe layout baseboard. Much easier on the craft knife I thought, but what glue should I use to stick all the bits together? I'm hoping that the combined wit and wisdom of Western Thunder will come to my rescue.

Thank you.

Hi Neil,

I have found that 'Glue'n Glaze' is very good and also any general PVA seems to work as well.

Looking forward to seeing the results.

ps Hobbycraft are still offering four A1 sheets for £10 - in their Chester store at least!

A good quality silicone sealer can save the day with some reluctant materials - depending on joint loading. Better with lap than butt joints. Smear on very thinly. Shame it resists paint though!

I have had most success with PVA, Resin W wood glue works well as long as you are sticking the card covering together. You need to make sure you have glue on the card edges for butt joints, and you might have to hold things together for ten minutes or so for the glue to dry a bit and grab. The PVA will stick the foam but it takes a while to dry as the foam being plastic is actually not very absorbent. You will also find that some solvent based glues like Evostik contact will dissolve the foam. Superglue does work but you need the very thick variety and an accelerator/kicker to get it to set quickly before it soaks into the card. As ever you might have to experiment a bit to find what works best for you and your project.
Look forward to seeing the results too.

Many thanks for the suggestions chaps; I'll let you know how I get on with this new fangled material.

On The Great Windowledge Railway, I used spray photo mount to put home printed brick paper onto the foam board, and glued it together with PVA. The advantage of the home print is that I could make the bricks fit the structure. It's also very easy to pin the foam board together to hold it whist the glue grabs. Dressmakers pins are ideal.

There are some pictures on my old RMW thread.

HTH and looking forward to your build!

I'm road testing a heady sarnie of foamboard and MDF, with Copydex filling. For some reason, I thought it might be worth a punt. I wanted some kind of fix, but wanted to nix the potential rigidity of PVA (discarded due to experience of using it with ballast in a previous decade). I've done it now to leave time until the Spring to check the feasibility.

Cheers

Another vote for a decent PVA wood glue.

Lap joints, card to card are best. Butt joints take longer to grab, but if you key the foam (poke with a point), the joint ends up stronger.

Not tried the special foam glue.
