A difficult choice. Both are so real.

You are too kind Alan, thank you. I think they look better in black and white which I feel tends to capture the era better. The shot below was inspired by a photo taken by Geoff Bannister at Pembridge

I really like the back scene is it possible to know where you got it? Thanks Duncan

Hi Duncan

Take a look here Art Printers. I used the 15" 'Hills and Dales' scenes 206A / 206B, however I cut the lower half of the scene away to leave the distant hills and a big sky, which helps give a feeling of depth and distance.

This picture gets my vote . Rather allegorical - a portend of line closures as the last train disappears into the distance .

The mods really must put a stop to this. People musn't be allowed to pass off photos of the real thing as all their own work!
It's just not on.

Its been a while since my last update, as progress on the layout has been slow, and until late last week I didn't have anything new to share. But in a flurry of activity I have at long last completed the line side fencing, installed the signal wire posts, and fitted York Modelmaking slates to the cottage and signal box roofs. So here are a few photos showing the layout as it is today, and more or less complete save for a couple of small details......

P1160204 (2).JPG

The first three photos show the fencing which is Ratio, it took an age to remove all the flash from the mouldings and to refine the posts and bars. The MSE signal wire posts can also be seen, though they could do with a little toning down.

Just out of reach from the spotters eyes, 4678 simmers away between shunts........

The cottages and signal box with new York Modelmaking slate roofs.......

Whilst the cottages were on my workbench I took this shot of the allotments, the camera timer was set for 10 secs, and then it was a mad dash to hold a spare section of backscene in place. The sunshine effect was down to pure luck and hadn't been planned.

Well that's is about it, I will still be adding bits and pieces to the layout and building more locos and stock. But I'll now be focusing on the first of two planned dioramas, unfortunately I've had to admit defeat as far as 7mm modelling is concerned. I could have built a layout of sorts but not the scene that I had in mind, so Llanbister Road shed will be in 4mm scale.

Thanks for following Llangunllo and for your support, I'll be back once the new project is underway and I have something worthwhile to share.

This model of a railway has given much inspiration to me as an observer for the detail, the colouring, the juxtaposition of buildings... all provide much pleasure.

All of which is enhanced by the photography.

Thank you, Graham

Glad you posted the update here Geoff, as I still can't log on and like those on your blog!

Still one of my all time favourite layouts, and I look forward to seeing your new project progress!

Very realistic - not too `clean` looking ; love the weeds, and the station obviously didn`t enter the `station in bloom` competition! :)
A labour of love without a doubt.

Well I'm back sooner than expected with plans and a few mock ups of Llanbister Road engine shed. The building is based on the shed at Tetbury minus the water tower.

P1160243.JPG

This is a rough card mock up of the shed, the scene itself being mocked up in Llangunllo's scenic fiddle year with the aid of some photo editing software.

Llanbister Road layout plan.jpg A.jpg

The plan for the new diorama measures 1000 x 350 mm, the area with the question mark against has since been resolved, more of which later.

Llanbister Road Crossing.jpgA.jpg

Thanks to some help from my photo editing software these images have been created using surplus scenic materials, actual models and a spare section of backscene. This is the current arrangement for the crossing, the building in the background is the old Penhydd feedstore, the one on the right that occupies the site of the question mark is a model of an actual building at Berriew near Welshpool. As for the cottage and shop, well they have both been lifted straight out of George Stokes book, 'Buildings in Miniature'.

This is the sort of scene that I had in mind when designing the diorama.

Llanbister Road Shed.jpg

Finally a view of the shed as it will appear on the diorama, albeit constructed from 2mm 'Foamex' rather than cheap card. The scenery will be pretty much the same on the diorama with a shallow cutting to the rear, rough unkempt grass in the foreground, and trees acting as view blockers. Nearly everything will be scratch built so it will take me a while to get on top of things.

PS. Whilst composing this update I am being warned that Western Thunder isn't secure, anyone any idea what is going on?

It's because the web address starts with http: rather than https: which means that the data being transferred isn't being transferred over a secure connection in an encrypted format - the extra s is for secure. Your browser is just warning you that data could be intercepted and read because it is in plain text. Although rest assured logon passwords are hashed (basically jumbled up a bit) so they aren't transmitted in clear text. However it would cost me a reasonable amount of money and/or time to get a security certificate to make it secure and seeing as there's no financial information, payment system or sensitive data in the posts I don't see it as money well spent at the moment. If the prices come down and setting up a secure link gets easier then I will consider it.

You'll probably give me a clip round the lughole for this Geoff, but I love the scene from 'Ivor the Engine' that you've recreated in your first photo...!!

Serious head on - I may have missed you saying, but what are the dimensions of the diorama?

Thanks for the explanation Adrian, though I have noticed plain text saying that the site was not secure I had never come across a red triangle with an explanation mark warning me that it was dangerous. That really threw me but is not appearing this morning.

Keith the diorama measures 1000 x 350mm, as for 'Ivor the Engine' I've also got Thomas and James :)

Mine is now showing as "Secure" - although it wasn't a while back as I queried this in a conversation previously.

Its good to know that its not just me, and that I'm in good company :)

Everything has been fine today until I came to upload a photo, then the red alert flashed up again, but following Adrian's explanation I'm happy.

On a different note Rob (NHY 581) recently challenged me to climb a tree and take a photo of the Llangunllo goods in true Ben Ashworth style.
The platform lamp is actually vertical and not leaning, so blame the camera :)
