Evening everyone,

Been recommended to this forum and just found it, and I've just joined tonight. As soon as I saw the description at the top of the homepage, about this forum being a haven for enthusiasts of the Great Western Region...I knew I'd feel right at home ;) Anyone who's seen a user over on RMweb called TangmereTornado - that'll be me.

Thanks to my dad, I've had a love of the Western Region ingrained into me from a young age, despite me being born two days after 50046 Ajax was condemned by BR...first one to guess the date gets a prize

Not to say I don't enjoy other facets of the British Rail network and history (although this modern image guff doesn't appeal a huge amount to me, and the day I willingly pay for a model of a Class 70 is the day my eyes fall out and I get sectioned under the mental health act... :vista: ), but along with my home turf of the Southern region, the Western is my favourite - the locos, the locales, the lot :)

I've recently started proper work on my first layout, one that Ive been planning and umming and ahhing about for a long time. Port Penare, a port town mainline branch-off terminus on the South Coast of Cornwall (supposedly) is my debut in model railway building, and I'll post up a thread soon on my progress thus far.

Look forward to chatting to you folks on here,

Adam.

Good evening Ian :)

Haha! Well, what can I say...I like 'em, the ol' Hoovers, and they became established out West, that's good enough for me...(braces self for possible backlash  :shit:)

I loved the 50's too (did I really say that!) but that was when they impressed on the west coast mainline, and before partially displacing the remains of the hydraulic fleet. My JLTRT kit is taking shape as 50041 (before being named, as in 1976) and will be sure to get a run out ahead of (as well as towed behind!) my D1000's ;)

Welcome aboard, Adam, and look forward to seeing your plans developing here.

Hi Adam

A warm welcome.

50's are just as impressive in my book (shall I get 'me coat? :)))

When you get under way looking forward to seeing some photos of the layout

CME

Thanks CME! It's the look of them that does it for me, and they didn't sound too bad either. A day spent trundling behind Ramilies on the MNR has sealed the deal for me

Cheers :) I suppose it wasn't the 50s fault that they displaced the hydraulics, just BR wrangling huh? That's awesome about the JLTRT kit, I just wish I had the funds for O gauge stuff, those kits look stunning  Are your D1000s JLTRT kits?

Cheers Rob!

My dad was of exactly the same opinion as you as a young trainspotter when his beloved Westerns were slowly fading away to be replaced by this nasty vacuum cleaner things...although he did warm to them when they were given rather evocative names and he discovered their engine sound wasn't too bad  :))

Don't get me wrong, I have a LOT of love for the hydraulics. Hymeks, Warships, Westerns, the lot...all very pretty and awesome machines  I still have a fond memory of being about 8 years old and seeing Western Ranger on the Severn Valley Railway,  and standing taking photos of her with my tiny disposable camera, oblivious to the throng of rail photographers behind me! I'm told it was quite an amusing sight  ::)

Thanks Mike :) I have a couple of baseboards built and a rough sketched plan down, as well as a pretty completed backstory, I'll post those up pretty soon.

Welcome aboard the madhouse, mate... The first loco I 'spotted' properly was 50 010 Monarch (pre-refurb BR Blue); Hoovers were always a favourite of mine as they were the only really distinctive things to pass through B'ham New St in the late 70's.
Largo Blue?, yeah, we'll let you in with that answer... :)) :))

The Dark Side here is pretty much anything non-Western; the real Dark Side is anything West... of the Atlantic Ocean.... 8) ;D ;) but find some US locos that are blue and you should still be safe around here... :))

Adam,

Welcome to the forum.  I too have a softspot for the Hoovers which was positively encouraged when I did a set of drawings of them many moons ago.

And when you're feeling that the Southern interest needs a bit more of a fix, you'll find there are a couple of us here who can oblige...
