Now, dare I display yet more ignorance, and ask what the difference is between Southern & GWR valences...???
Both company's had different valances in different areas usually depending on which company they were absorbed from, but the difference between these GWR valances & the Ilfracombe ones is I need more decorative holes in mine.........probably one about every 5mm over all 12 feet of it

Hi Phill,

you beat me to that last pack, but then I found proper Southern ones on the Kirtley Models stand, only 5x300 pieces in a pack, but they do look the business. might be tempted to get some of his LBSCR etched doors etc.

Well, I tried to start learning a little bit about everything, so I ended up knowing less & less about more & more, until I knew nothing about anything.....

Ah - the difference between a 'Jack of all Trades' and a 'Specialist'.

I've learnt more and more about less and until now I know everything about nothing!

I don't wish to be rude, but I am perplexed.
People keep saying that 0 gauge has a satisfying mass to it, in which case why do so many of the trains in the video stop with such a sudden jerk, or accelerate at a rate and to a speed which would have the driver up before the foreman?

This sort of thing was discussed ages ago on RMweb, and is down to what came to be known as "P.P.O" ....

P!ss-Poor Operating....  :headbang:

How about because people are prepared to accept poor running as the norm, and their locos simply aren't up to it? This is a soap box issue for me, but there are only 2 standards of running; perfect or not good enough. And that covers track work too. I have never watched the well-regarded Broome Junction layout for more than about 40 seconds, as in those first 40 seconds I have either seen lurching locos, a derailment, or a stalled loco followed by the Hand Of God rescue service.

I do realise I'm setting myself up for a fall, but the Heyside group regard perfect running as the starting point for a convincing picture, not the end point. Off my soap box now.

Glad you got off it - it was getting crowded. ;)
I don't think you are setting yourself up for a fall: as on real railways, things don't work perfectly all the time, so the occasional hiccough is fine - sometimes it can be tiredness, too (I have hit the stop blocks a few times due to this at exhibitions). It is when it is the same loco, or the same place, that it is no longer an accident.

Actually, good running is not so much of a soap box issue for me, as a fetish...

Ok it's an obsession then :)

This is the sort of thing I am after.

The trains go over 2 baseboard joins in this clip, one of which is an access lifting section, and I defy anyone to tell me where they are from the motion of the locos/carriages/trucks. Just noticed the drunken lamp :headbang:

Miles off topic now, sorry
