7mm GWR 14/48xx

I about to place an order with Dave Sharp for an MOK GWR 14/48xx 0-4-2T but I am a bit short on photograph information. Can anyone reccommend a good source of material that would be useful in the build?

Thank you.

Peto's Register of GWR Locomotives Vol 3 from Irwell Press is a starting point. Locomotives Illustrated 60 also covers GW 0-4-2s. Both are long out of print but easily obtained from the usual secondhand sources.

If you have a specific loco in mind, as Steve says above, then WTers will usually be able to help.

What number are you thinking of?
I'll have a look at what I have in my collection.

Ah, that’s the point Steve, I don’t know what I want at the moment and this is why I need more information! Dave mentions Peto’s Register of GWR Locomotives Vol 3 and perhaps that is where I should start!

Nevertheless, thank you for your kind offer and when I have more of an idea I will be back to you.

Thank you Dave, that sounds as though it is what I need so I will keep my eyes peeled for a copy.

Unfortunately I am just starting my research and my knowledge of this class is not good so I don’t yet know what I want in the way of a specific loco (see my reply above) .

To be honest I can't remember if there have ben articles on the class/es in Great Western Journal.

I have quite a few copies and I don’t remember seeing anything Alan, but I will have another look at the weekend.

There is an online build of this kit on RMWEB if that helps. I also have a large collection of close up photos of the 14xx that's preserved at Didcot if that helps in any way.

Thank you Mark. I have found the build on RMWeb, which is a great help, but I need to do some more research to see which one I will build.

It appears there was an article about 48xxs spread over issues 22 &23 of Great Western Railway journal.

Here's a few pictures for reference.
I hope these can be of use to you

Anything is of help thank you and this sort of example is very useful, especially showing such differences as you point out.

I had a hunt around in the garage last night and I found 22 &23 of Great Western Railway Journal and they do indeed have an article on the 48xxs and this too will be useful.

Thank you all again for your help and advice.

I have settled on a loco from the last batch built (4860 - 4874) and there is an excellent photo on page 336 of GWJ 22 of 4863 which is exactly what I want. It is just before the war, ‘Shirtbutton’ livery and no top feed and it was taken at Gloucester which is the right area. The photo is obviously one side only, the right side, so a tall order I know but if anyone has a photo of the left side of this loco, or one in similar condition at this time, I would appreciate it.

Thank you all.

I have 3 photos but 2 taken in June 1952 showing both sides ( no top feed) and one taken in 1959 showing the front and LHS after top feed had been fitted (probably as result of a change of boiler). Any use?

Thank you, I am very interested. As long as they are in a similar condition, i.e. no top feed, etc then yes please.

Hi Mark,
Could you possibly insert a link to the RMweb build thread?
I haven't been able to find the build.
I would like to build one of these locos later this year and would be interested in a sneaky preview if poss!
