Heljan Fans (7mm)

Does anyone have a solution to silencing the fans in Heljan diesels?

I am working on a Hymek for a friend, and the fan sounds appalling. I am running it at low speed from the variable voltage outlet on a Zimo 695, and it is clearly audible even when the loco sound is on.

Is it the motor, or the gears, or just the way it is mounted on the body, or a combination of all three? I think it is inexcusable, considering the cost of these things.

Any suggestions gratefully received.....

Its the gears and there is not a lot you can do about except turn up the loco sound or turn it off. It may get better if you leave it running for a while, most of them are ok but you get the odd one (my 31) where its just better to turn it off.

Thanks for the replies.

I usually don't do fans (or lights for that matter), but just for the heck of it, I've been thinking if there's any mileage in replacing the motor with a miniature pancake drive, or the gears with something rubber (belt or friction device) ......

(PS: Double-entendre intended!!)

We shall be adding a motor for the fan of our JLTRT Cl.37. Steph has suggested using a miniature motor / gearbox mounted under the fan and driven from an AUX output of the LokSound decoder. DCC Supplies has a range of suitable motors.

What speed should the fan run at? I would have thought that somewhere there is a suitable miniature motor which will run at the required speed without the need for any additional drive components - this would be the way to minimise noise.

I have an interest because hidden away in a cupboard there is a box containing a Class 31
