Heljan RTR diesels

Hi all,

the Guv has quite rightly pointed out the Dan's D1031 Wetsern Rifleman thread has been 'commandeered' by comments regarding Heljan RTR locos. I'm therefore starting this thread in order that future comments can be posted here rather than on Dan's thread. (No doubt the Heljan posts can be transfered across to this thread.)

Just a 'starter for 10' this was the donor for 47 631 for comparison with the finished article.

I think it would be nice to put all the modified Heljans together on one thread if that's OK with Mike ? :D

Two for the price of one!
the 7mm version will be getting some work done eventually, candidates being the windows and bogies.
As I have said elsewhere IMHO its a better Hymek that the JLTRT

So what are the issues that make this a "complete fiction" ?!? (not my words- but an opinion I saw on RMweb)

All I can see offhand is that the front handrail looks a little low..??

PS FWIW IMO this thread might as well be Heljan locos of any scale... ;)

  Looks like a 47 to me  I dont know much about 47's so I cant comment on the fuel tanks etc but like the Hymek the bogies are a bit two dimensional, but then this is an artifact of the moulding process and the MMP detail kit does make a difference.
Put it this way if someone gave me one I wouldnt flog it, wereas if it was a Steve Beattie kit .......... :vista: :vista: :vista:

I agree, in fact, with the general quality of most RTR - in all gauges, why restrict it to Heljan.

Complete work of fiction it clearly isn't, although when I looked at it at Warley I thought that there was something not quite right about the "shelf" at the top of the nose. Nothing that a bit of filing and fiddling wouldn't resolve though and the whole thing is no doubt much cheaper than the various kit options available in 7mm.

Here is a real one that I have tried to pick to match Mike's picture.

Either way, diesel shapes are blooming hard to pin down, although I am endlessly impressed with the Heljan Hymek in this regard, if only they'd blow it up to 1/32 scale

As an aside, one reason that Martin Finney hasn't produced any diesels is the difficulty in getting them right, which must say something about how hard a job it is (for anyone).

As I mentioned yesterday, Richard Dockerill, has said that moving the handrail and the lantern bracket up makes for a big improvement

I shall have ago on mine when the winter comes around

Hi CME.

The name Richard Dockerill rings a bell with me. Is he normally a 2mm scale modeller who, for some reason, built a 7mm scale Collett Full Brake from an Orion kit and finished it in rail blue?

If so, can you ask him to stick some piccies of it on here please, as I was mightily impressed by the finished model.

Regards

Dan

p.s. Sorry for the thread hijack... ;)

The 'shelf' BTW seems more 'radiused' on the prototype to my minds eye

I agree. Also the horizontal handrail is dead straight on the model whereas on the real thing it looks like it follows the curve of the shelf

Yes, he's done several magazine articles recently about various O scale locos he's built; the SB Class 22 was one, more recently a Lima 33. And very nice they are, too.

I thought this comparison of the same livery & end might help ?

I agree the main handrail & lamp bracket would benefit from a tweak & the small handrails & front foot steps need painting on mine ...........perhaps we could do with a similar pic of the MMP 47 from on of the owners on here for comparison :)

...I believe that he did a SB 22 for Traction mag?
He did; November 2008 Traction IIRC as I was just starting on my SB 22 kit at that time. He missed the side grilles that were in the wrong place, but made a far better job of the cab windscreens than I did, and he also totally rebuilt the noses. He does a neat thing with flexible hoses between the body and bogies, too.

Hi G uys,

in conversation with somebody at the North Wales & West Cheshire meeting yesterday, I was told that he had had an order to build an MMP Class 58 cancelled because Heljan were planning to bring one out within the next eighteen months - we had all better start saving now
