Hi to everyone.
First post on here. I joined Western Thunder recently and have been finding my way around. I'm just getting started in railway modelling after retiring from work. First thought was OO, but found I was getting frustrated that I couldn't fit as much in as I wanted, so I'm now thinking N or 2mmFS, and building some bits of track and turnouts to get a feel for both, including the new N Finescale.
I'm planning to build a test shunting plank as my first go, partly to check that my eyes will cope with the small scales. Longer term I'd like to do a larger layout based on Oswestry/nearby area. I'm still debating about the period to model, most likely the 1960's in an alternative world in which the railways in the area lived on longer than in reality, but I also find the Cambrian Railways era very appealing.
Most impressed by the good stuff on here, and also the 2mmFS association which I've joined, and the N gauge forum. I'm just not sure I want to re-wheel etc all my (planned) stock to fit 2mmFS!

I hope you enjoy your time here. I'm hugely impressed with the strides 2mmFS has made over the last few years.

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement. I'll post on here as I progress. I've assembled some test pieces of 2mmFS and N Finescale plain track, both went together fine once I paid enough attention to de-burring and tapering the ends slightly. The two are almost identical, apart from the (fairly small) difference in gauge of course! And I've just about mastered which is the top of code 40 rail.

I'm building a 2mmFS turnout using copper-clad and solder. My soldering technique needs to improve quite a bit, hopefully that will come with practice. I've also got a N Finescale turnout kit to try.

John, I'll try an Association easytrack turnout and see how that goes. I think I may prefer it to the copper-clad system.
Simon, thanks for the lead to the MRJ, I'll get a copy, it should be really useful.

If you've joined the 2mm Association then you should already have the Easytrac turnout article - it was published in the Oct/Nov 2mm Magazine.

Compared to some recent developments, 2mm is starting to look quite large. But if you go in for the Japanese T scale, be sure not to sneeze while shunting - brings a whole new meaning to things that ping across the workshop.....
I think I'll stick to 0 gauge.
