Western Thunderer
Thank you for your replies. At the risk of boring everyone, attached is one last photo, this time an old diversion into a 'ScaleTen' cul de sac- don't ask. It is awaiting- still- cosmetic axleboxes then weathering, but will get finished one day.
I too am very attracted to the line in its twilight period of faded (sort of) grandeur , indeed that's when I knew it, and I very much like the idea of a 'might have been' such as yours. Plans were mooted once for a line (possibly a light railway) from Collingbourne to the Netheravon area of Salisbury Plain, which conjurs up all sorts of possibilities across the eras.
The artistry shown with your weathering is also inspiring and complements accurate 'mechanics'  to produce a very attractive model indeed. This combination of the two disciplines is probably what is most appealing about 'good' modelling. Maybe there is an optimum scale/ gauge for that, or is that an eye of the beholder thing?
Anyway,  I  probably need to rein in the scattergun approach and concentrate more on one scale, one era, and one prototype. The quality of work on this forum is very helpful, informative and useful in that regard. All good fun. All the best.
