Hi,

We went to Telford in September. We're going to Doncaster in February. The time inbetween did not allow for any major works, not that we wanted to do any after the big pre-Telford push. What we have been doing is tinkering; adding more goods wagons, particularly increasing the number of Dingham-equipped wagons, adding a fully coaled rake of minerals to balance the empties. We must have added 25 or so wagons to the roster, and having a couple of Dingham fitted pick up freights will add much to the shunting capability, and operator enjoyment.

Roger provided a few mineral wagons. They arrived in pristine condition, and he said I could do what I wanted with them :D

So I set about weathering and coaling them, and this is the latest to join the rake.

I'll do a little more when I look at the rake as a whole - just a bit more oil and grease on the underframe really - but that'll do for now.

Cheers,

Richard

I'd agree with JB Richard, a bit too shiny for me and in a full train it may leap out a bit. Spot on weathering though pal, I like the rusty door and subtle rust patches in general:thumbs:

The weathering is good, I think, particularly above the solebar and the shininess of the coal doesn't strike me as too jarring - if it were fines or dust, then yes - but perhaps there could be a bit more variation on the running gear - evidence of oil around the brake gear pivots and on the lower half of the axleboxes and the white-paint on the end of the brake lever. See - BR 21ton double door unfit minerals - 1950 design MDO | B201099 COAL 21 @ Swansea Dock 80-09-11 © Paul Bartlett w - for example (though the body shows evidence of rather extreme replating).

Perhaps the most critical thing, however, is that the wagon modelled is a 21 tonner rather than a 24 1/2 tonner. In 7mm, even on something the size of Heyside, this is big enough the see; in 4mm, I could probably get away with it.

Roger.....report to the Principal's office immediately.....100 lines on identifying BR mineral wagons.

Adam,

Thank you for letting us down so nicely. You are quite right, and I hadn't spotted that. I assume I have some spare transfers in my unused stash, so I shall redo the number box and reweather.

I agree about the oil on the underframe; as I said, I shall take the whole rake off next Wednesday and go over the lot.

Hi Richard - no problem, easily missed and, mercifully, easily changed (much more so that push rod brakes. Yes. More than once). I only wish Parkside made this one in 4mm. For such a simple wagon, the cut and shut required to produce it from the versions they do produce is surprisingly involved...

It's
Ok, timid question, raised from the Back of the Class....

How the heck can real coal look too "coal-like"...??? :headbang: :(

In mine and Micks opinion, it's too shiny, especially for midland coal which has a duller finish to it.. You'd possibly get away with it on a welsh layout as welsh coal is much shinier.. Every now and then on the engine we'll find a lump of welsh in with the polish coal we now use, stick it in a bucket and save it for when we need it... either that or throw it out the cab as it wrecks engines..

JB.

Hi,

Working day today, which invariably means a bit of testing before we get started.

It's very rare I have an GW loco in front of the camera, but Trevithick appeared for a running test after being sound chipped. I had to try to pose it where the background did not say 'L&Y' - an impossible task, but this was the best I could do:)

Just caught up with this Richard..a fantastically real layout, the possibilities are far greater in O but obviously a lot of space is required...great modelling!

Thank you Phil,

There is no dislike icon, though you can 'unlike' a previously 'liked' post.

I would remind everyone that Heyside is going to the BRM Doncaster show on the weekend of 13th/14th February.

In fact there is good 7mm representation with Apethorne Junction, Hollowbeck Shed and Fourgig East, as well as Heyside.

We will no doubt be very busy, but please say 'hello' if you are going.
