While looking for something else entirely I stumbled across this rather wonderful selection of photos from Flickr. There are many, many highlights but something to note is just how few vehicles were on the roads and the general good order of the buildings and their relatively limited colour palate in terms of paint and no brilliant white anywhere.

I'm not wholly convinced this one is Wales, charming though it is:

But this is certainly a rare colour view of the Nantlle Tramway:

And this view of Caernarfon would be rather different today but in some ways wholly unchanged:

Note the early LMS van behind the off-white car on the left, the cars parked on the quay - tourists almost certainly - and the red lorry tucked in the corner against the wall. The castle, as ever, is magnificent.

Ha! Any ideas as to the type of Tractor? Looks like a single cylinder job, but not, so far as I can tell, a pre-war Marshall or something like a Lanz.

The cream car behind the LMS wagon is an F type Vauxhall Victor produced from 1957 to 61. Early versions (pre '59)had the exhaust running through the rear bumper and no doubt had rusted away far too soon-this type was well known for this.

Also these sidings were little used after 1961/62 according to a friend's late father who was a goods guard on the line working out of Bangor from 1958-64. The De Winton Foundry (now a listed building) where many of those lovely little locos were built is just out of shot to the left
