.....you obviously paint in the same fashion as me :)
Before going all out for a complete rub down to bare metal /plastic/resin I will wait for the paint to dry, and while holding the body under slow running water or in a bowl of water, using gentle circular motion, rub with 1500 grit wet or dry paper. Be patient, and gradually the run will sand back. Once level, continue with 2500 and then 3500 grit paper. I tend to give all my paintwork a good going over with 3500 anyway.
The other way is to use Halfords rubbing compound in gentle circular motions. Be VERY gentle. All this takes a while, but can save a whole lot of time and effort masking and re spraying.
I have mostly used the above on cellulose paint, but achieved good results with enamel. (Enamel took a lot more patience as you can easily take off the top coat with the rubbing compound.)
If all goes belly up, you can revert to plan A and re spray!

Good luck!!

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a go.

The loco in question is a Black 5 and it's the varnish coat which has run. It's been drying for a couple of years now, so should be hard enough!

The reason I want to avoid stripping, rubbing down and repainting, if I can avoid doing so, is because of the expensive Fox lining kit I used. Of course I could re-line by hand, but that would mean stripping the perfectly well painted and varnished tender as well!

Decisions, decisions.

Well gentlemen I took the bull by the horns and rubbed down the affected areas as their was also some orange peel effect on the nose and will give it re spray tomorrow and potentially give the yellow another coat .

Hi Brian,
I haven't used this process on varnish, but isn't it just colourless paint?
Please be VERY gentle and patient!
I am none of the above and it usually turns out fine. You may notice after using the 3500 grit on the repair, the rest of the loco may look a little rough though!
I forgot to mention, if using the rubbing compound, use a tiny amount on a soft lint free white cloth and rinse afterwards.
Really hope it works for you, perhaps try the technique on a lesser model for first?
ATB,
Richard

Lesser model?? What's a lesser model?? All hand built with loving care!

But thanks for the heads up. I'll give it a go.
