Just browsing the interweb to find out a bit more about the locos I saw in Georgia last week I came across this jolly useful site.

Railroad Picture Archives.NET

I suspect it not a place to go if you are in a hurry....;)

Enjoy

It's my first go-to for both loco and rolling stock photos. It can be a bit slow to load thumbnails, but that's not altogether surprising when thousands of photos are in question. I often end up searching by railroad, then grouping things by road number or model type.

Railpictures.net is another good site. Often the pictures are more artsy or panoramic, rather than the typical roster shot style that predominates the Railroad Pictures Archives site.

Lastly, Railcarphotos.com and Locophotos.com are also useful, although they now require a registration and login to access the photos. One of the things I like best about these two sites is they often include additonal useful info like builders, capacities, plate designations, build dates, and so on.

All four sites are handy for cross-checking to see if model road numbers are legitimate, or to identify prototype stock when all you catch in passing is the road name and number.

Edit: correction on the *photos.com sites - it looks like you can again see preliminary data on stock. For a while they went straight to a screen prompting for login. You can see thumbnails of stock now, but nothing bigger. It used to be that you could see a lower res, smaller format photo without login, and a bigger, higher res photo with login.
