Large Scale Jolly at Reading

Well, it's come & gone (bit like Christmas really) & can only say what a fine show it was, if you didn't attend, then you missed a good one.

Really good to see Lea Sidings in the flesh, it's not as big as the photos would suggest - but it is (will be) perfectly formed, interesting that it is still considered a W.I.P. (but then when is any layout/diorama considered finished?).

Managed to put a face to Unklians avatar & a catch up with Geoff Nicholls, both of this parish & jolly decent chaps.

Interesting to see what Peter Korzilius is developing (has developed) in G3 - even parted with some cash for one of his Midland Long Lows (D336). If I'm not mistaken, David 1/2d has posted a piccy of his (PK's) 8 planker elsewhere on WT, didn't have enough cash & forgot the cheque book (Doh!!! - it'll have to be later......).

Lots of other things went on as well, but the day went by in bit of a blur.

As I was not impressed by either the number or quality of the exhibitors then I am surprised by your comments. Why do you think that the show was a good show?

Having attended a number of ALSRM events in the past, I have found them to be predominantly 0 gauge centric (not a bad thing' but if I want 0 gauge I'll go to, in no particular order, Kettering, Doncaster or Telford), this was the first 'large scale' event that was 'larger scale'.

Opposite our stand was a narrow gauge live steam shunting layout, didn't get chance to look closely at it, but it did appear have a constant, large crowd in front of it for most of the day. In the 'bowling green room' I noted, 2 G3 layouts, Chalfont & Lea Sidings along with the G3 shunting plank, a 7mm broad gauge layout (Maristow), modern image shed layout (the operators seemed to have trouble in adjusting the volume of the sound emanating from this layout) again in 7mm & layout based on the Darjeeling railways running coal fired locos. One major absentee appeared to be G1MRA, no layout, no stand......

Ticked a number of my boxes, but......

I think it had to be a good show if you are in to G3 . I can understand why you might have been disappointed as a finescale modeller in G0 or G1 perhaps. I have to admit to not liking the venue at all, it is a swine to get to and park ( I left home at 7.30am to get there with least fuss !). The hall for the layouts is very gloomy, which is OK for layouts with the1r own lighting rig, but some were in deep shadow. Would be interesting to get a traders view they didn't seem very busy to me .
I had a good time meeting and chatting to lots of folk. The G3 AGM was a bit low key. And I spent my pocket money on some bits and bobs for various projects.

The large G3 presence this year was of course due to the re-scheduled AGM and is a one off. The Society's own event looks like being at Barry island on 5th August. We said we would take a trade stand there but are now not sure. Is anyone else intending to go - traders or visitors?

On an unrelated note, but because someone mentioned him,
Does anyone have contact information for Peter Korzilius? Preferably an email due to being firmly stuck in the USA.

I've attended for three years in a row. Found it very disappointing this year with a feeling of it being repetitive and downtrodden (same layouts as before). The catering was very disappointing and of very poor quality (not keeping the tables and surrounding floor clean either). Decided already not to go next year.

My thoughts exactly, but relating to the December 0 Gauge Show - the Place is a Dump! (IMHO)

Yes, it is a shame. The one good layout there was 'Chalfont' which would inspire anybody to have a go at G3 in a small space (and yes, I have been thinking about it but probably in the garden).

I enjoyed it, it was my first chance to show Lea Siding to my peers, and it received quite a few compliments. I came home with an idea for a second scenic section and a working timetable which includes a passenger service. And nice to see the other G3 layouts.
However, unless the organisers make a determined effort to invite several gauge 3 layouts next year, Mike's right, this will be just a one-off. Which in my opinion would be a shame.
I doubt that I'll get to Barry Island, it would be a bit of a trek from London, though surprisingly cheap if you book in advance.
