LarryG's loco & coach WB (4mm/00)

I am not sure it is worth starting a wagon WB, so I am putting this Oxford Rail GWR 'Toad' here. It's faults have been well aired and rectifying them is not easy. But for me, it is a cute little thing. Apart from planking off the middle window, the rest is down to weathering using Humbrol Dark Grey Wash, PPC Dirty Black thinned with white spirit, and Humbrol Dark Earth weathering powder. This wagon gave me the opportunity to try out Halfords Matt lacquer and I can thoroughly recommend it....

Hi Larry

I have finally caught up with you! Just arrived back in England with a portable workshop and two Sidelines Portholes (7mm) to work on. I have also received the Finney7 Princess Coronation loco kit along with the beading, so I can be back in business on the tender, or will be as I left it in France.

The Period I Brake Third kit I acquired from you is now in primer:

It will be used on the Ruabon-Barmouth line as an excursion coach, which I rather imagine is why you bought the kit in the first place for Carrog. Set in the late 1950s, would this coach have been painted all crimson? I also imagine it might not have been in the best of condition by then, waiting all winter for the summer excursion trains to run.

There are a couple of bits missing and the bogies belong to a Period III Porthole (hence no full length boards below the axle boxes).

I believe this might be my first post on WT

This was a quickie. It was brand new although I failed to spot it was weathered. By good fortune the glazing was very easily removed, so it got completely re-sprayed in blood & custard with the number at the LH end. By 1953-4 (the period I model) it would have been in traffic some four years so it was suitable weathered using Humbrol grey wash and Humbrol Dark Earth weathering powder. I bought it to replace one of my brass LMS brakes and so it was fitted with a Kadee coupling at hte brake end....

I also repainted the interior. Bachmann captured the sides over-lapping the solebars and deeper than normal cantrail very well....

After being gifted a Hornby Railroad BR Mk.I open third, it was put aside until I figured out how it could be used on a W.Region layout set in 1953. I decided it will be inserted into one of the Southern Region trains to Chester/Birkenhead where it's Pullman gangways would fit with Maunsell stock. I figured it could be used whenever there was a need for more third class dining facilities.

It wasn't until 1954 that the first Southern Region Lot was completed, so I am hoping the Lot was started in 1953! The lower part of the coach was sprayed Ford Rosso Red and numbered accordingly. Then it was sprayed with Halfords Satin Lacquer. Assuming the coach was quite new, the underframe and roof have received limited weathering. The lavatory window was given two black ovals and the ventilator grill painted with Humbrol dark grey wash. Seats were painted red. Plastic wheels were replaced with Bachmann metal wheels...

Thanks Rob. You were quick off the mark there. Typical Hornby, they're looking good.

Hi Larry.
It's good to find you on here now I've signed up to WT.
I've just refreshed my memory of this new coach from the Delph book. It's certainly very different looking to the normal British coaches. It also appears to have a rather unusual roof profile - quite a bit deeper than normal. I suppose that for a viable model, you need to use a commercially available roof extrusion?
Dave.

Hi Dave, glad you too are on here now. I used an MJT LNER extruded roof (Dart Castings) on the Barnum coach, which is the deepest on the market.

EDIT: The Barnum article has been deleted because it got all mixed up during an edit. I will try to post it again sometime

Larry, Great to see you posting again. Both you and some of the other contributors to this thread have mentioned using cellulose paint. I made inquiries recently about having some cellulose paint made up for me at a motor factors (colour matched against a sheet I had painted with PPP Crimson Lake enamel from my airbrush). He indicated that cellulose is no longer permitted, and that he could only provide and acrylic paint.

Where do you guys source cellulose colour?
Thanks a mil
Darren

Hi Darren,

I get my cellulose paints from Autocolours in Rhyl, but there is also a company near Birmingham that do exact Railmatch mixes and in Cellulose. I will try to find their contact details and report back. I'm sure it's on here somewhere in one of the informative threads.

I think because of the advancement in water based paints in the automotive industry, this may start to occur more and more, as Celly is phased out for H&S reasons. Shame really as Celly is an excellent medium for spraying.

David

Edited to add the contact details I found on here: Spraywell Dudley, and yes, they can supply in litre tins or other quantities if read.
Contact 01384 456069.

And the post is here: Car Paint Matches Post number 51 ;)

I use Express Paints.
They do small touch up pots which is more than enough for my small 2mmFS models

Touch Up Pot & Brush (Cellulose)

Or tins 0.5l or larger Industrial gloss cellulose

They are very helpful, I just give them the RAL code or BS. number.

Also following the recommendation from Warren I use the anti-bloom thinners
Antibloom Thinner 5.0L

At £13.14 for 5l it works out a darn site cheaper than the models shops £5 for a 125ml tin.

I get it locally. Cellulose is totally reliable. When its gone so am I, as I am all through with adapting to suit directives.

For anyone looking for Cellulose 'down south' try Rainbow Paints Ltd. who have outlets in Westbury, Wiltshire - Ferndown, Dorset and on the Isle of Wight. They are, of course, in business to supply all types of paint on a commercial scale but I have found them to be most obliging and the guy I see in Ferndown is genuinely interested in our hobby. They will make up any colour you like in Matt, Satin or Gloss finish (available in rattle can or standard tin).

What would be very useful would be RAL or BS paint codes for various Rail Colours....

p.s. Good to see you on here Larry - I still have the Hornby L1 you weathered and I purchased from you via RMWeb :)
