Layout Presentation

Another year on and the Calcutta Steam Tramway gathers dust. However over at Little Point it's all systems go for its first public humiliation in a fortnights time at the Corris Railways show in Machynlleth over the August bank holiday weekend. As part of turning a home diorama into exhibitable layout I've put some work into it's support structure and lighting rig.

You'll have to excuse the abject squalor of the surroundings but I'm too busy at the moment to tidy up.

"Abject squalor"..?? Looks like a luxury Gentleman's Activity Bunker to me...

Time I think for another bite at the presentation cherry. After taking the very incomplete Vischkaai to the Corris show at the end of August, it's been returned to the bench and the centre turned around so that I can work at cobbling the siding that snakes off behind the warehouse/workshop building. Whilst impressing cobbles attention is directed at keeping the rows tidy but there's some spare capacity for the mind to wander into other areas. It struck me that I was taking as much time, care and trouble over something that the public wouldn't see as I had on the upfront
pavé.

I'd always intended to model all the buildings in the round, mainly because I was going to operate from behind the fiddle yard and I wanted a complete picture to look at whilst doing so. I also realised early on that it gives the opportunity for other viewpoints which effectively doubles the frontage of the layout even if you can only see one side at a time. Finally taking short cuts with structures, only modelling the visible side, is often advocated to 'save time' however if we look at things the other way you get more model making pleasure per square cm of layout if all sides are fully done.
