Le Mans does not beckon this year

Last year Peter and I did not make the trip to the 24 Hour race so that the Good Lady could enter and visit a National Quilt Show - we chose to do a Grande Tour of the West of Scotland and that included the Penguins at Edinburgh (a Grand Day Out). On reflection our decision to forego the race was a harmonious one as the Good Lady got a rosette for her quilt entry.

So this year the race does not attract because of the withdrawal of some of the LMP1 teams - can Toyota win finally ro is there some devious plan to dash their hopes? Instead of the pilgrimage down south we shall be heading north west, this year Peter and I are taking a week in mid-July to do the "Great Little Trains of Wales" (probably the Welsh Highland, the Festiniog and the Welshpool). In addition, there are a couple of other itches which need scratching:-

* the Llangollen Railway - any WTer who can offer a guided tour of the workshops?

* Coracles... about fifty years ago my Parents took me to see Salmon Fishing from Coracles, I think that this was at the Cenarth Falls. Anyone know where I might see this sight today?

Of course, other suggestions appreciated.

thank you, Graham

Coracle wise you could go here:-

http://coraclemuseum.co.uk/main.html

Our parents used to live down that way and a random visit to see the falls at Cenarth once saw the eldest offspring getting a coracle trip under the bridge.
Of course Cenarth is a long way down from North Wales at anytime of year, let alone high summer and if you are that far down you might as well do the Gwili.

Corris and Tallyllyn can both be done in the same day (just), the new museum at Glyn Ceriog could be done on the way to the Welshpool - if they are open mid week like last year - http://www.glynvalleytramway.org.uk/

WHR - Whether you are riding or linesiding, not many trains and a lot of (slow) road. A round trip in a day is possible just.

Festy - another good day out if you are doing it properly but linesiding is again time consuming but there will be plenty of trains at that time of year.

LLangollen. A very nice run but unless you can get that guided tour all the interesting bits will be tantalisingly out of reach.......

V of R. Not been there since BR days (Whit 1978? Have you still got the photos Dave?) but I do remember it is best to sit on the left going up.

Not sure what the various Cambrian bits are up to at the moment (Oswestry, Llynclys etc)

Snowdon - have you won the lottery recently?

Cheers

Graham,

Having been out with the hounds and thought about it a bit it does depend to an extent where you are based.
If you are Mid- Wales ish then the Brecon Mountain is do-able with a bit of disused line exploration on the way, if you are at the top end then Great Orme, Llanberis (National Slate Museum (free), Llanberis Lake Railway and Snowdon) or even Penryn Castle (free to NT members).
The GVT and Cambrian lines are probably weekends only but might make a good stop over on the way there/back.

The main factor in deciding what to do on any given day is of course the weather.........

A "soft" weekend in Portmadoc (named after a real english bloke not a fictional welsh prince!!)

Ssshh, Liverpool.

Why? Price! Freebie B&B in the Marriot. OK we have to drive a way, not a problem as Peter and I enjoy that aspect of our tours.

Chester Zoo is a likely candidate as we both enjoy the relaxed nature of such a tourist location - well, relaxed until we get to the Penguins.

Shall try to get to see the restored GWR warehouse in Liverpool.

Birkinhead trams on the sunday? Long day out on WHR, Great Orme etc. Head north to the Ribble Valley at Preston docks. Just ferreting around Chester centre for the day can be quite rewarding - take the train there and have a pint :)
Just watch out if you use the new bridge at Runcorn on the welsh trips. £2 toll each way to be paid online (or over phone) by midnight the day after. :-(

We are heading up your way for mid-July so the open days do not work, a pity. Possible that Wednesday 11th might work, what time?
