Louville Lane Cameo

As a change from working on the "Lane" I decided to place some unbuilt buildings on the upper level to see how it might look before I start working on them. The large station/parcels building might need to be narrowed slightly, but I think it will work. This again is a Walthers kit and the cream coloured low relief building on the right is the remains of the kit which I built into the back of the hotel overlooking the shed end of the layout.

There will be an overall roof from the end of the parcels building covering the parcels platform and over the footbridge on the left of the layout, resting on the arches at the back as in the original model and plan.

I've been working on another building The Grand Hotel or it at least was once it is now slightly run down,

The Grand is still not finished, I've now modelled a few open windows, but the curtains etc need adding and looking at the photos some of the brickwork needs a slightly scruffy touch up.

That’s an imposing structure, Alan.

Reminds me of the eclectic mix of buildings that towered over the approach roads to Liverpool Exchange station.

I haven't posted for a few days, mainly because I've been unhappy with the back arches which will support the platform canopy. The pillars were all slightly different sizes. I bit the bullet and started again.

There was also the problem of how to fix them so they could be moved when I get to the backscene before final fixing. Perhaps you should have started with the backscene and worked forward I hear you say. That way though there was always a possibility of being marked or damaged. Anyway this is the solution I came up with. After building the arches and mortaring and some weathering I strengthened the back with balsa wood allowing brass rods to be glued in.

The arches with brass rod were then place on its base (that too isn't yet fixed permanently)The position of the rods marked and holes drilled and the arches were then placed on top. It worked like a dream.

The arches have been finished and I used a photo of them to try out the idea that I mooted before of having a train in the rest of the station with a background of further arches. The carriages and Western were scaled at about 3.5mm and the arches were at roughly 3mm to try and give some sort of perspective.

Looks very convincing, works very well I'd say. I do think the train needs more contrast in the final printout, but you probably realise that.

Over the last week I have been fabricating bits for the overall roof of the upper area, that will sit on the back arches. At the moment the trusses are blue-tacked into place to give me some idea of how it will look. Tomorrow I will order some canopy brackets from York Modelmaking. The next job will be to paint everything before finally glueing things together. The trusses and supports are made from various evergreen products.

I quite like the way the shadows fall that I'm almost tempted not to have a roof, but I think I will. It will be a part glazed roof a bit similar to the one I had on the train shed at Kingsbridge Regis

This will look good when completed . A nice bit of 60's urban grime.

By the time you have glazed and weathered (yes, weathered) the roof this will become translucent and therefore diffuse the light. Which, in turn, will soften or eliminate the shadows cast in the open arches on the backscene (assuming a single light source).

As Tony alluded to earlier, I think the train and arches in the background would appear much darker as would be the case when looking into the train shed from the outside (unless of course the roof has been removed!) going by two photographs in my collection. Manchester Victoria in the early 80's (mine) and Harrogate in the mid 60's (one of my dad's).

When I redo the background train with a roof over it I will experiment with the darkness of the train. I will produce several with different saturation, contrast and darkness levels.

The canopy brackets have arrived and have been glued together, lovely pieces of work. I have also fettled the H girder uprights so that they are all the same height and with the use of a small spirit level the same height as the arch supports. The posts, canopy brackets and roof trusses now need painting before the gluing together and starting on the roof. Could be a couple of weeks yet.

Thanks to the warm weather I've primed and started painting the columns and canopy brackets and
primed the roof trusses, possible photos tomorrow if I have the time
