Can I suggest you add a linking rod to the three separate fall plates underneath? They outers will drop and become trapped between loco and tender.
That's a good point, Cliff. I didn't do that with the split fallplate on my Black 5 as a result of which it's now vertical between loco and tender.

Must get the glue out.:)

Hi,

Valve gear day today. Those of you who saw it at Telford on the rolling road may have noticed a clicking as it ran. I'd identified this as part of the inside valve gear touching somewhere. Today I bit the bullet and sorted it. 1/2 an hour to tie up the problem - the inside valve gear crosshead slippers were striking the transverse slidebar support bracket - 1 hour to dismantle the front end, 1/4 hour to file clearances, and 1 hour to reassemble.

I took a video from below, from above, and with the whole loco together so you can see how the inside valve gear works, particularly the rocking arms.
I then tried it on Heyside - just the chassis with a flying lead on DC and to my astonishment, it went round the tightest main line curve without derailing. I will still need to fine tune it, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi Richard,
Absolutely brilliant and even better seeing it on your stand at Leigh! It is of course an excellent kit and almost certainly the best available for this prototype. That said, it is the builder who is responsible for the end result and your work on this thread is stunning.

Cheers,
Peter

Thank you all for your comments. It has been a really enjoyable kit to build, and if the thread encourages others to have a go, so much the better (and I really don't mean that from a sales point of view)

I love the pipework in the cab. I am just about to start mine in a MOK GWR 48xx and am struggling to find out prototype pipe sizes and what sizes of copper wire will replicate them. The only obvious one is mains cable (1 mm2?) for the main water supply pipes which I believe are about 2" diameter. The smaller pipes are a mystery. Most multi strand wire seems to be made up of 0.2 mm diameter wires which look very thin. I would be grateful for any help both for sizes of pipes, their wire equivalent and where the wire can be obtained (ATC conduit sizes would be useful as well).

I can't help with the prototype pipe sizes, but copper wire is freely available in a multiplicity of sizes on fleabay.

The only disadvantage is that the quantities tend to be rather more then we'd use on any single model, but just think that you won't have to buy any more for the next one.:)

Also, check that what you are buying is bare copper wire. It comes in a multiplicity of colours for jewellery making, and you could end up with pink if you are not careful.:))

As for brass wire I'm sure that you already have your favourite supplier for such sundries, but give Hobby Holidays a try - Phil Atkinson is one of the most helpful chaps I've come across, although his web site takes a bit of chewing through - hobby holidays model railways - Google Search but a phone call will save you the trouble.

Eileens do bags of copper wire in metre lengths in a large range of diameters. Great Western Journal No. 22 featured a GA of the 48XX and you should be able to lift sizes from there. Contact a well known book shop in the West Country!

Mentioned previously here
Copper wire supplies

They are sold by weight so plenty of wire - although new link is required.
