Missing thread replies

I've twice now recently received emails indicating that someone has replied to a thread that I am watching (in fact threads that I started) yet when I view the thread via the forum these replies do not show up.

The first was Richard's last reply to the Posting Conventions thread wherein he stated the preferred standards for photo size and resolution in posts.

The second was just this morning where John Miller appears to have replied to my sw1500 kitbash thread.

Neither posts show up in the actual threads, at least for me. John Miller's entry was simply a kind reply to my thread. But Richard's reply was a bit of useful and apparently quite relevant information that other's might like to reference.

None of this is the end of the world, but also doesn't seem quite right to me either, so possibly some sort of glitch is occurring? I'd like to reply to John's post if I could.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim

With the way the software works you get a notification as soon as a reply has been made to a watched thread, but the software doesn't withdraw said notice in the event that the post was deleted.

In terms of the two replies that are no longer visible, Richards was deleted as there are a couple of details on the photo size query we wish to finalise and John deleted his own post.

I'm afraid that doesn't help concerning replying to Johns post, but hopefully it clears up what has happened.

All the best
Steve

There's no glitch Jim - I saw your post in your SW 1500 thread where you said ......

.......... But I don't often get any grief over the matter. I'm guessing it's partly because I don't apologize for it, and partly because I'm a big guy that can appear unapproachable. Don't let my avatar photo fool you! ......

.... and I made some off-the-cuff comment about how your avatar photo did look like a big unapproachable guy, but that was inconsistent with your writing - especially as I seem to remember somewhere you had offered the hospitality of your home to any members who happened to pass by that way.

Anyway - on reflection it didn't quite read like I intended and as it didn't add much to the discussion, I decided to delete it.

I'm a little bit curious as to how you knew it was a "kind" comment and not something completely different - have you found a way to review deleted posts? - or did you just happen to read it during the very short time it was up in the thread?

Steve's comment about how the software works was interesting - I didn't know that deleting a post still left some residual evidence of the post behind in the form of a notification. I guess in future I'll think my posts through a bit more before hitting the 'Post Reply' button ....

Cheers .... John

EDIT .... Ah-ha! - I've just had a thought - maybe the email notification you get when someone posts a reply to your thread - includes the content of the reply .... :)

John, yes I received that email notification after you posted. I went to view the thread and was confused when your reply didn't show up.

I certainly did not take offense to your post. Mine was made tongue in cheek, and I presumed the first part of yours was as well. It may be simpler for me to just paste in what I would have said earlier if your post had still been there. I also tried to send you a message via the conversation tab above but was rebuffed as I presume you have your settings a certain way. Here it is though....

Hi John,
I just wanted to send you a quick note about your recent post.

I've been in a the doldrums here recently due to any number of considerations. Your post this morning made me laugh, and I greatly appreciate it. It had value for me that transcends the modeling realm.

I see that your post to my thread is missing, and consequently learned from Steve Cook of the Flying Squad that this happens as it's been deleted for whatever reason. Please feel free to contribute as you see fit, whether it has to do with the modeling or just to give me a gentle nudge in the ribs. I don't take myself to seriously for the most part, and most others shouldn't as well. I can laugh at myself, as I've learned that if I don't, others will do so for me.

Best regards,
Jim

As mentioned up top, your post struck a chord for me this morning and I wanted to acknowledge it. I certainly have the capacity to get upset or hurt about things. But not over things like this. So next time, carry on. Worst case scenario, add a smiley or tongue sticking out thingy and I'll know for sure.

Cheers, Jim

A couple other thoughts. If the need for seriousness ever arises, I shall do my best to make it known by saying so explicitly. Thankfully this doesn't happen often and almost never relating to trains.

Secondly, I've no particular issue with posts that don't "add much to the discussion" as long they aren't asinine or outright trolling. In fact, I think it perfectly normal for a bit of drift and conversational chit chat to creep into threads. Most of us fancy ourselves to be clever and interesting people, and how are we to prove it to everybody else if we can't chime in with some tangential nugget here and there.. I've learned an awful lot of extra stuff along the way via this method.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim

Over time I've become increasingly aware that the lack of - non-verbal cues - facial expressions - tone - and intonation - inherent in on line communications can sometimes render them liable to misinterpretation or misunderstanding and I can find myself holding back on a comment that I would be completely comfortable with making in a face to face situation.

I appreciate your reassurance that I need not have had such concerns on this occasion and you're right - the use of smilies can go a long way to make up for these shortcomings ....

BTW - Gotta love the new avatar - I must try and find a good one for me .... :)

Cheers .... John

New avatar photo to put John at ease. Tee hee....don't get too used to it though as I have a tendency to switch them up occasionally just for the sake of change or to reflect something more topical at the moment.

I agree on all counts about the nuances, and frequent failings, of non-verbal communication. Things can get mixed up quite easily. I subscribe to the adage about not saying without having anything good to say, when it comes to forum discussions and such. I can certainly be wordy, so it's amazing the amount of things I've refrained from posting over the years due to their limited worth. It's ok though, it's saved me a lot of typing !

Cheers,
Jim

My interest in the phenomenon of taking selfies is about equivalent to the amount of hair on top of my head. So I took the following as a joke to amuse my friends. Doing my best here to look barely interested....

Sometimes it's fun to look ridiculous.

Carry on,
