I got the exhaust panels soldered on today. I started by making a short section of exhaust pipe in case I decide to install a smoke generator.

I then set about cutting a hole in the roof to accommodate the exhaust pipe.
This entailed cutting through a strengthening rib, inconveniently located directly below the exhaust port.

Before soldering the panels to the body, I cover pre-soldered panels and rain strips with wet kitchen roll to prevent them coming loose during soldering.

Panel soldered but still to be cleaned up.

The adjacent panel was the soldered on and cleaned up.

Exhaust pipe from within the body showing cut web.

The exhaust port looks great with the pipe added...it actually looks like it could look very realistic with a smoke generator installed:thumbs:

Nicely done  You have an advantage that the body is itself a massive heatsink, I'm struggling to find a simple solution for my Heljan Hymek (we need a scratching head smiley)

Possibly!
Thanks for the photo Brian, the only time I have seen the Clayton boiler grille detail!
Well worth the effort!

Richard

It is indeed looking very good, but when you fit the cabs you will also determine where the bogie pivot points are so this is wher you need to make sure they are in the correct place as mine were not and needed moving back a little. Therefore I would be tempted to build a bogie so you can where it is going to go before you fit the cabs.

Thanks for the info Richard. I was thinking of soldering the cabs to the body minus the bogie pivots. Then adding some spacers between the pivots and body ends then when happy with the fit, soldering them in.

Just having a tinker with the fans.
As supplied, the fans have a flat top
But I have seen domed tops and with the top of the shaft protruding. So the question is which is correct for 1662??

What Heather said!

This is looking very good and some of the pictures, (both model and prototype), are very handy. I have a few 4mm ones to do in time and the boiler ports have been proving a minefield.

Anywho, cracking work so far, she's looking good.

Cheers.

Sean.
