Hi TV, its funny you should mention D1020 Hero in that terrible state;) That is the next western that i am doing ,then probably D1039 King or D1046 Marquis . Yes Hero will be in that state and i have been thinking of ways to achieve it:confused:

Christmas and prepping for re-applying for my job (Good old BT) ;) is at last out of the way, I can now get down to some modelling (Hurragh my creative side cheers) So back to the class 21 & 29 project in Gauge 1 1/32nd, I have started soldering the grills, radiator grill, windows, roof sill & lower body side strip onto the body side, The grill frames required taking down along its top edge by 0.3mm, also Fred made a bit of a bo bo with the alignment holes, so these need to be totally ignored and pay close attention to the required measurments in the superb instruction booklet and with the aid of my digital caliper the correct measurment were duly scribed onto the surface for accurate alignment.

The grills for the main radiater were made up from 3 seperate etched sheets, which was a bit fiddly however this was successfully completed with a bit of patience at the Cheltenham model show.

After i completed this I took the time to clean the body side with my new Dremel 2001 drill and cleaning brushes, which the bodyside have come up a treat. I have also fettled all the required parts for the bodyside and roof which was a time consuming task however this makes it a more effcient system for me personnaly to work. next up is the bodyside footsteps and recessess that will require soldering.
The cab ends are totally finished with the exception of the damaged beading (very thin resin around this area) along the top of the Drivers window which will require some attention.

Cheers

Hi Western Thunder'ers
I have been, when the opportunity arises, trying to put some hours into trying to get the 2x class 29 diesels built and ready for the paint shop this year ! Progress has been quite good, even though I am building two of these NBL type 2's, One for myself D6107 and one for Bob Hunter D6109. D6109's body has been completed and is now with Bob awaiting painting, while I have been cracking on constucting 2x chassis's, 2x battery boxes and 4 bogies with all the associated detail.
The next area to tackle will be the body itself, which will require filler in places, then to scratchbuild a cooler group section which will be visible behind the side grills. The cabs and cab back bulk heads have all been built, just awaiting priming and a top coat.
Some photos of the progress made so far attached. At last I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Hi All
At the same time as building these two class 29's from the Fred Phipps range, I have built a Slaters standard van. I had the original intention of cutting the body and chassis down from 10mm to 1/32nd as I did on the grounded van body on my Worcester Road layout. I even spent the time 5 plus years ago drawing out the reduction area's on paper, where I would make all the neccessary cuts to the body and chassis to reduce it to a 1/32nd cut and shut, however with the time consuming build of the 2x class 29's, I decided to build it as it is, a quality 10mm kit from Slaters, which over the Christmas holidays went together very quickly in comparision to the NBL type 2 diesel's I am bulding. I have scribed part of the roof to show the planking and the wood grain as I intend to have this showing through the the roof material. I next intend (when the warmer weather arrives) to put it into primer and then into Bauxite top coat with the chassis being black. then I can progress onto weathering it. I shall probably do this at the same time as finishing my Father in Laws Slaters 7mm standard brake van which just requires the top coat of paint treatment.

Hi Rob
I feel the same when i visit your 7mm thread, the good news is we are all insping one another to greater things, and if we get stuck there is always someone on this site to offer a suggestion to aid us on our way. keep up your good work as i am keeping my eye on that bubble car of yours.

A couple of images of my finally finished D854 Tiger, which has been out to 3 shows so far this year, Telford, Basingstoke and Cheltenham.
Will post some more when I have a bit more time, I am currently just finishing of my Class 29 D6107, again will post some updated images later.
Cheers for now

Steve, that is just awesome, so very realistic.

It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Can I ask what working caused D600 to appear at Worcester Rd? Fantastically realistic BTW.
I could say modellers licence :) or that both Bob Hunter and Fred Phipps supported me at the Telford show and brought along there excellent D600 & D601 respectively, Fred's D600 kit is stunning, he is having a big hand in Kernow's D600 and making sure the CADS are perfect, so the 4mm chappies will also have an excellent D600'er.
cheers

Having had a day off that corresponded with a sunny autumnal day, with that lovely low light you get this time of year, I managed to get outside and take some images of D6107/6107. Having never seen a Class 29, I ended building 2 of them, one for Bob Hunter D6109, Building these Fred Phipps kits has given me a real appreciation of the NBL type 2, D6100, Class 29 locomotive. Why D6107 if I had never seen any of them run? well as a 9 year old I remember there was a black & white image in the photo section of the 1971 Locoshed spotting book of a rear 3/4 view of D6107 hauling a SR utility van behind it at Corrour and fell in love with the image hence why D6107 is my favourite class 29.

That's some of the best diesel weathering I've ever seen - you've captured how dirt and oil stains actually look and not overdone the paint damage either - very well done.

Very good weathering . It's the ability to achieve the heavier? weathering and damage where it's likely to occur i.e. the ends, leaving the bodysides cleaner.

The warning panels are too clean - where's the squashed entomology collection........:D or didn't they go that fast? This was obviously more prevalent on the WCML - a selective enlargement from one of my photographs. Stafford in the early 80's . Okay - so it's blue and electric...... Off to the back of the class now.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for your kind comments, personally I find it harder to achieve an ex works looking locomotives, any imperfection in the paint application potentially ruins what you were trying to achieve. Any ways weathering any type of loco or stock is much more fun, it certainly brings your model to life, I take your point on not being overdone, I see a lot of manufactures adding weathering to their 4mm ranges, a heavy blast with an airbrush which lacks in context and contrast, Heljan (sorry Heljan) attempt at weathering 1200 Falcon for example.
