Just joined and thought I would say hello.

In my mid 40's, based on the Sussex / Kent border, I have always had a fascination with garden railways from the long summers many years ago when my late father and I planned on building one in our garden.

I now find myself with a decent sized garden which is just begging for a meandering main line for decent length express trains to whoosh by on while I sit in the sun with a cold beer!

The GWR and particularly Devon and Cornwall area in the 1925-35 period with the Riviera, Ocean Liner specials, Torbay Pullman and other expresses has always been my favorite, and thus I stumbled across this forum.

I have a JLTRT 70' Toplight on its way to me and this will be my first coach build. I am a reasonably experience modeller (1/32 fighter planes, 1/16 tanks, 1/10 racing cars) but am still a bit nervous about it. Not sure yet whether I am brave enough to try painting it in the full pre-29 lining or a simpler 30-34 style... we shall see!

My goal over the next 5 years is to build up 3 rakes of 7-9 coaches to form the following:

1) the 1929 Riviera
2) an Ocean Liner special, maybe with an Ocean Mails van, possibly a set of articulated diners and some 70' stock or maybe even some Pullmans
3) a nice mixed bag of Toplights and Collets with a Syphon G for a cross country feel

I have a smorgasbord of books including Russell, Train Formation & Carriage Workings, some excellent Panier magazines with interesting articles on places like Kingswear and some GWR journals with a focus on the articulated sets and the Pullmans, and finally every single August edition of Railway Modeller that had an O Gauge garden layout in it, so I am reasonably well armed.

Looking forward to seeing you all out there on the forum.

Welcome aboard!

I believe we may have had a chat on the phone yesterday. Don't be afraid to burrow around the forum to see how other modellers - including me - deal with the JLTRT kits. We all seem to have slightly different approaches to similar issues.

Don't forget, we do like lots of photos of your progress. It's our standard currency here.

We certainly did have a chat Heather and it inspired me to crack on and get myself a JLTRT coach to see where my building skill-set it at! I have a feeling it won't be long before I am handing it over to you (or at least the painting of it).

Welcome from East Kent.

There's bits of JLTRT toplights rebuilds, from a part built second-hand purchase, on my RMWeb thread at

Porth Dinllaen in 0 - Page 9 - 7mm+ modelling
Et seq.

Sorry, it's not a neat story, but there might be some bits & pieces that help. I'm sure starting with a new kit will be easier, if not necessarily quicker.

Many thanks for the link Simon. Have just spent the last 3 commutes sat on the train reading your excellent thread. Very entertaining and learnt quite a few good tips re curved brasswork.
